Polanco gets $18 million deal, returns to Phillies

Placido Polanco returned to the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday, agreeing to an $18 million, three-year contract.

The 34-year-old free agent won Gold Gloves at second base for the Tigers in 2007 and this year but will shift to third base, which hasn't been his primary position since 2002. He replaces Pedro Feliz, who became a free agent after the Phillies declined his $5.5 million option.

Polanco was traded to the Phillies in July 2002, then dealt to Detroit in June 2005.

Also: The Atlanta Braves agreed to a $3.2 million, one-year contract with right-handed reliever Takashi Saito.

Saito, 39, has 83 saves in four major league seasons after a long career in Japan. He is expected to be the Braves' setup man.

The Oakland Athletics acquired third baseman Jake Fox, second baseman Aaron Miles and cash considerations from the Cubs. Chicago got right-handed pitcher Jeff Gray, minor league outfielder Matt Spencer and minor league right-hander Ronny Morla.

Ex-ref Donaghy says he was threatened by mob

Disgraced former NBA referee Tim Donaghy told "60 Minutes" the mob threatened his family to ensure he provided his insider picks to inform betting on games.

"They basically told me that I needed to give them the picks, and if I didn't, that it's a possibility that somebody would go down and visit my wife and kids in Florida," Donaghy said in his first interview since his arrest in the betting scandal, which airs Sunday on CBS.

Donaghy, who was sentenced to 15 months in prison, said he bet on games based on his knowledge of other officials' biases for and against certain players and teams. Donaghy said he was winning 75 percent of the time, which drew the attention of the mob.

Also: Southwest Ohio authorities said former NBA player Kirk Snyder has been transferred to a mental health facility after being ordered back to jail for allegedly removing an electronic monitor. Snyder, a former UNR star, pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in April to felonious assault and aggravated burglary charges stemming from a home break-in.

Utah Jazz forward Matt Harpring said his comeback attempt to play this season is over and his career might be as well. The 33-year-old never has completely recovered from an infection that developed after ankle surgery in 2008.

The UNLV women's basketball team scored the final seven points and beat host San Diego, 71-66. Center Sandrine Nzeukou led the Lady Rebels (3-4) with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

World Cup winner will take home $31 million

The winning team at next year's World Cup will get $31 million in prize money.

FIFA said the overall prize pool to be divided among the 32 participating nations will be $420 million, a 60 percent increase from the 332 Swiss francs (then $261.4 million) it paid out at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Also: Former football coaches Mickey Curtright (Las Vegas High), David Varrato (Eldorado) and John Wise (Basic) are among those who will be inducted into the Clark County High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame and introduced during the coin toss for the Class 4A state title game Saturday at Sam Boyd Stadium.

The team induction went to 1944 state champion Las Vegas (8-0), the only team in state history not to allow a point all season, according to the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association record book.

The Chicago Blackhawks signed three of their top players -- Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Duncan Keith -- to lucrative contract extensions.

Keith, 26, got a 13-year deal worth a reported $72 million, making it the richest in team history. Kane and Toews, both 21, signed five-year deals reported to be worth $31.5 million each.
