Woods wins PGA Tour's points award again

Tiger Woods has won the points-based award as player of the year from the PGA of America, which was virtually a lock when the FedEx Cup ended and became a mathematical fact this week.

His six PGA Tour victories (10 points each) were twice as many as anyone else, and Woods had wrapped up the PGA Tour money list (20 points) and lowest adjusted scoring average (20 points).

It was the 10th time Woods has won the PGA award.

If Woods wins the PGA Tour player of the year award, it would be only the fourth time since it began in 1990 that a player won the award without having won a major. Woods (2003), Greg Norman (1995) and Wayne Levi (1990) were the others.

Henin to return to tour in January tournament

Former No. 1-ranked player Justine Henin, who hasn't played in 15 months, has confirmed she'll make her return to the WTA Tour at the Brisbane International in January, two weeks ahead of her comeback to Grand Slam tennis at the Australian Open.

Henin, 27, has won seven majors, 41 WTA Tour titles and an Olympic gold medal. She said her goal is to win a Wimbledon title, the only Grand Slam singles event she hasn't won.

Also: Martina Hingis, who won five Grand Slam singles titles, won't make a comeback to competitive tennis.

The 29-year old Hingis, who retired after getting a two-year ban in 2007 for testing positive for cocaine, said in an interview with L'Equipe that she is happy with her new life. She added that even without being tested positive, she probably would have retired.

Acta, Indians talk for eight hours about job

Manny Acta, fired by the Washington Nationals in July after two rebuilding seasons, spent almost eight hours in interviews for the Cleveland Indians' managerial position.

Acta was the first candidate to get a face-to-face interview with the Indians, who plan to meet with former New York Mets manager Bobby Valentine and Los Angeles Dodgers hitting coach Don Mattingly.

Also: St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow for the second straight offseason.

Pujols will undergo a debridement procedure -- which could be used to shave bone spurs -- today in Birmingham, Ala., under the direction of Dr. James Andrews.

Ned Colletti signed a multiyear contract extension to remain the general manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers. No other details were announced.

Charlotte Bobcats starting shooting guard Raja Bell has a partially torn ligament in his left wrist that could require surgery and sideline him for most of the season.

Coach Larry Brown said Bell's agent has requested a second opinion. Brown said it's possible Bell could get treatment without surgery and return sooner.

Chris Chelios, the 47-year-old defenseman who spent 25 years in the NHL, signed with the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League.

Chelios, who played last season with the Detroit Red Wings, will make his debut with the Wolves on Friday. The Chicago native was limited to 28 games in the 2008-09 regular season because of a broken leg.

Landon Donovan was named the best player on the U.S. soccer team for a record-breaking sixth time. He was instrumental in the Americans' successful qualifying campaign for the World Cup and its trek to the Confederations Cup final.

Russian gymnast Yury Ryazanov, 22, was killed Tuesday in a car crash near his home, just days after winning the bronze medal in the individual all-around competition at the world championships. He died after a head-on collision near the city of Vladimir, about 125 miles east of Moscow.
