Penner, Ernst lead men's golf
to fourth tourney title of year

The UNLV men's golf team dominated the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, taking the team title and the top two individual spots Sunday at Palm Desert, Calif.

UNLV shot 5-under 283 in the second round and 6-under 282 in the final round to post a 20-under 844 total, seven shots ahead of Texas Tech in the 24-team event.

The Rebels' Kevin Penner won for the second straight year, with a 7-under 209 total. Teammate Derek Ernst was one stroke back in a three-way tie for second, and Blake Biddle (211) finished in a three-way tie for fifth.

It was the 12th-ranked Rebels' fourth victory in six tournaments this year.

Also: The UNLV softball team beat San Diego 7-3 in the Gaucho Classic at Santa Barbara, Calif.

Stefany Valentino went 3-for-4 for the Rebels (7-7), and Pauline Monreal had two hits. The teammates combined for five RBIs, including Monreal's two-run homer in the sixth inning.

The UNLV baseball team gave up two runs in the ninth inning, losing to Nebraska 8-7 at the Kleberg Bank College Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas.

The Rebels (3-4) posted a six-run third inning, including Scott Dysinger's two-run double to make it 7-3. But the Cornhuskers slowly climbed back in and went ahead on Chad Christensen's two-run double in the top of the ninth.

The UNLV women's tennis team lost to Texas Tech 5-2 at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. The Rebels (6-4) took two of three doubles matches to earn the first point, but the Red Raiders won five of six singles matches.

Lucia Batta got the Rebels' lone singles victory, beating Elizabeth Ullathorne 6-1, 6-3 at the top spot.

The UNLV men's tennis team lost to No. 25 Fresno State 5-2 at Fresno, Calif. The Bulldogs won two of three doubles matches for the first point, then took four of six singles contests.

Stanford beats three in playoff
to claim LPGA's HSBC crown

Angela Stanford won the HSBC Women's Champions on the third playoff hole, her first victory since 2009 and her fifth on the LPGA Tour.

The 34-year-old Texan parred the last playoff hole in Shanghai, beating South Koreans Jenny Shin and Na Yeon Choi, and China's Shanshan Feng.

Stanford, who earned $210,000 for the victory, shot 1-under 71 to join Shin, Choi and Feng at 10-under 278.

Also: John Huh parred the eighth hole of a playoff to beat Robert Allenby and win the Mayakoba Golf Classic in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

Making his fifth PGA Tour start, Huh parred all eight holes in the playoff, the second-longest in PGA Tour history.

Huh, 21, closed with an 8-under 65 to match Allenby at 13-under 271.

Sluggish Wranglers fall short of sweep in loss against Aces

The Wranglers fell behind quickly and never got on track in a 5-0 loss to the Alaska Aces in an ECHL game at Anchorage.

Las Vegas (35-19-5), which beat the league leaders in shootouts in the first two games of the three-game series, trailed 2-0 just 7½ minutes into the game, and it was 4-0 midway through the second period.

Also: Pete Weber became the most successful bowler in U.S Open history, bowling to the title for a record fifth time in North Brunswick, N.J., with a strike on his final ball in the 10th frame to edge leading qualifier Mike Fagan, 215-214.

Jurgen Melzer capped his stunning run through the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships with a broken right big toe by beating Milos Raonic of Canada 7-5, 7-6 (4) in Memphis, Tenn., for his fourth career title and first since 2010.

Juan Martin del Potro beat Michael Llodra 6-4, 6-4 in the Open 13 final in Marseille, France, claiming his first title of the season.

Del Potro, 2009 U.S. Open champion, briefly wobbled while down 0-30 and serving for the match, but the fourth-seeded Argentine closed it out when France's Llodra netted a forehand.

Fifth-ranked David Ferrer won the Copa Claro, downing defending champion Nicolas Almagro 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in an all-Spanish final at Buenos Aires, Argentina.
