Grizzlies won't admit making Iverson offer

The Memphis Grizzlies general manager refuses to confirm whether the team has made a formal offer to guard Allen Iverson.

Iverson tweeted Wednesday that Memphis had made him an offer, and ESPN.com reported general manager Chris Wallace confirmed the Grizzlies had made a formal offer. But Wallace Thursday through a team spokesman would only say he did not confirm an offer to ESPN.com.

"We have had a strong level of interest in Allen Iverson since the beginning of free agency and we have made that very clear to him," Wallace said in a statement.

Also: Former Kentucky basketball coach Billy Gillispie has pleaded not guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol following his arrest early Thursday in central Kentucky.

Gillispie wore an orange jumpsuit and said few words during his video arraignment. The judge told Gillispie she was suspending his right to drive in Kentucky because he refused to take blood and breath tests.

According to a police report, Gillispie had a strong smell of alcohol on his breath and slurred speech when he was pulled over along a highway in Lawrenceburg about 30 miles from Lexington.

Gillispie was fired after last season.

Shaquille O'Neal received a ticket in Hollywood for stopping his car in the street.

Officers spotted O'Neal's dark blue Ford F-350 pickup truck on a street shortly before 2 a.m. Thursday when O'Neal was talking to some people. He was cited for impeding the reasonable movement of traffic and allowed to drive off.

Blackhawks star told to apologize to cabbie

Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane and his cousin have pleaded guilty to a noncriminal charge of disorderly conduct and have been ordered to send a written apology to the Buffalo, N.Y., cab driver they were accused of roughing up.

The 20-year-old player and his 21-year-old cousin, James Kane, were given conditional discharges, meaning they will avoid any penalties if they stay out of trouble for a year and apologize to cabbie Jan Radecki.

Also: Jacques Demers, the Stanley Cup-winning coach who has spoken frankly about his lifelong battle with illiteracy, was appointed to the Canadian Senate.

Gatti's wife plans to sue over false arrest

The wife of boxer Arturo Gatti intends to sue the state of Pernambuco for arresting her as a prime suspect in her husband's death a month ago.

Amanda Rodrigues spent 18 days in jail. Gatti, a two-time world champion from Canada, died July 11 as he and his family vacationed in the Brazilian resort town of Porto de Galinhas.

A day after Gatti was found dead, police said his 23-year-old wife strangled him with her purse strap as he drunkenly slept. But on July 30, police ruled the 37-year-old boxer had committed suicide and Rodrigues was released.

Also: UNLV golfer Brett Kanda's bid for the U.S. Amateur title ended when he lost to South Korea's Byeong-Hun An 4 and 3 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.

Simeon Rice is making a comeback with the new United Football League.

The New York Sentinels announced they have signed the 35-year-old defensive end. Rice last played in the NFL in 2007, when he was released by the Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts.

Jamaican sprint star Usain Bolt says he wants to try a new event -- the long jump.

The world-record holder in the 100 and 200 meters says he thinks he could be a good long jumper some day.

Bolt says he has been "messing around" with the long jump since high school and would like to compete in the event before he retires.

A 17-year-old British sailor has become the youngest person to sail around the world without assistance.

Mike Perham grabbed the solo record after completing the 28,000-mile trip in nine months and crossing the finish line in Cornwall, in southern England.
