Mexico routs U.S. to win Gold Cup title

Mexico won its fifth Gold Cup, breaking a decade-long drought on U.S. soil by routing the Americans 5-0 in the final in East Rutherford, N.J.

Before a capacity crowd of 79,156 overwhelmingly dominated by green-clad Mexican fans Sunday, the visitors scored all their goals in the second half. Captain Gerardo Torrado started the blitz with a penalty kick in the 56th minute, and Mexico added three more goals over the next 23 minutes.

The United States fielded an inexperienced squad after several top players were given a break following a stunning second-place finish in the Confederations Cup last month.

Power wins IRL race; fuel spill burns Kanaan

Will Power led from the pole and won under a caution flag at the Rexall Edmonton Indy in Edmonton, Alberta, with the race marred by a pit fire that burned driver Tony Kanaan's hands and face.

Power finished 1.094 seconds ahead of Penske teammate Helio Castroneves.

Kanaan, driving for Andretti Green, was injured on his first pit stop when the ethanol fuel hose failed to shut off properly, showering him and his car in fuel.

Kanaan said he pulled out to protect his crew members from a fire, but seconds later his cockpit was in flames. Nearby Penske crew members hopped the wall to spray the car with fire extinguishers and dump a bucket of water on Kanaan, who suffered second-degree burns on his thumbs and a small part of his face.
