Broncos' Jordan sued over gambling debts

The Mirage has sued Denver Broncos running back LaMont Jordan over $20,000 in gambling debts, plus interest.

Lawyers for the resort filed the lawsuit in district court and said Jordan applied for six gambling markers in June 2008. The lawsuit says that when the checklike markers were deposited, they were returned because of insufficient funds or an inability to locate the account.

An application attached to the lawsuit shows Jordan identified himself as a football player for the Oakland Raiders.

Jordan played for Oakland from 2005 through 2007 and played for New England last year.

Also: Former New York Giants star Plaxico Burress will be arraigned Aug. 20 in Manhattan on a weapons charge for shooting himself in the thigh at a New York City nightclub.

Burress was indicted Monday on two counts of criminal possession of a weapon and one count of reckless endangerment. He faces a minimum prison sentence of 31/2 years if convicted.

The lawyer for a woman suing quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for alleged sexual assault has given the two-time Super Bowl winner more time to respond to the lawsuit.

Reno attorney Cal Dunlap said Roethlisberger's attorneys now have until Aug. 21 to file their response.

The woman, who worked as an executive VIP casino host at Harrah's Lake Tahoe, claims the quarterback lured her to his hotel room under false pretenses and raped her during a celebrity golf tournament last summer. She's seeking a minimum of $490,000 plus punitive damages.

A suspect in the slaying of Washington Redskins star Sean Taylor no longer wants to withdraw his guilty plea.

After meeting privately with his mother and attorney, Venjah Hunte, 21, told a Miami judge he's ending his effort to withdraw the plea. Hunte pleaded guilty last year and agreed to testify against four co-defendants in exchange for a 29-year sentence.

FIA president Max Mosley settled a lawsuit with the publisher of Germany's largest newspaper over reports that the motor sports mogul played sex games involving a Nazi theme with prostitutes.

Axel Springer AG agreed to pay $290,000 to two charities and publish an interview with Mosley in its top-selling Bild newspaper. In return, Mosley agreed to drop the suit.

In the suit filed last year, Mosley had demanded $1.4 million from Bild and other Springer publications and $700,000 from its online edition in damages for their text, photo and video reports on Mosley's session with the prostitutes in London in March 2008.

A minor league pitcher convicted of throwing a baseball that injured a fan during an on-field melee in Ohio last year has been released from jail pending appeal.

A Montgomery County judge Thursday sentenced Julio Castillo, 22, to 30 days in jail and three years probation.

Pens' Crosby brings Cup to Nova Scotia

Sidney Crosby brought quite the present to his hometown during a celebration of his 22nd birthday.

The Pittsburgh Penguins captain arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia, carrying the Stanley Cup, landing in a military helicopter on the flight deck of HMCS Preserver. Crosby then took the NHL's iconic championship trophy on a tour of Cole Harbour, the suburban community where he was raised.

"That's what we get a kick out of, us players, is the sharing with everyone," said Crosby, who also made a private visit to a children's hospital in Halifax.

"When you finally win it, you realize the experience that comes with it and how good that is," he said. "I'm finding that out right now, but it's probably everything and better."

Also: The Wranglers signed goalie Michael Ouzas, who split time last season in the ECHL with the now-defunct Fresno Falcons and Reading Royals.

Ouzas, a former Ontario Hockey League Goaltender of the Year, went 10-6-1 with a 2.68 goals-against average for Fresno and compiled a 10-16-0 mark with a 3.51 GAA for Reading last season, his first as a professional.

Ouzas joins center Chris Neiszner as the only players signed by Las Vegas for the 2009-10 season.

Baseball star Harper to be featured on 'E:60'

Former Las Vegas High baseball standout and Sports Illustrated cover boy Bryce Harper will be featured on an episode of the ESPN network sports magazine "E:60."

The profile will deal with Harper's controversial decision to forgo his final two years of high school to play at the College of Southern Nevada next season.

The show will air at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Also: A proposal that would require incoming freshman men's basketball players in need of academic help to take six credit hours in summer school is being evaluated by the NCAA's Board of Directors.

Players would have to pass three hours to be able to play.

Roger Federer is showing off his new doubles team.

The Swiss tennis great has posted the first public photo of his twin girls on the Internet. Federer wrote below the photo on his Facebook account that the girls and mother are "doing great." He thanked friends and fans for their wishes.

Federer and his wife, Mirka, each are holding a baby in the picture. Federer said the photo was taken by his father. Charlene Riva and Myla Rose were born July 23 on what Federer called the best day of his life.

Andy Roddick beat big-hitting Ivo Karlovic 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5) in the quarterfinals of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington. Roddick overcame the first two breaks of his serve in six career matches against the 6-foot-10-inch Karlovic.

Maria Sharapova, on the comeback trail after a shoulder injury, defeated Urszula Radwanska 6-4, 7-5 in the quarterfinals of the LA Women's Tennis Championships in Carson, Calif.

Los Angeles Galaxy star David Beckham said he is thinking about buying a Major League Soccer franchise when his contract is up.

Beckham has two years left on a five-year deal he signed to join the Galaxy in 2007. He said his deal gives him the right to buy an existing franchise or start a new one.

Jessica Hardy broke the world swimming record in the 100-meter breaststroke by almost half a second at the U.S. Open in Federal Way, Wash.

The American was timed in 1 minute, 4.45 seconds, lowering the old mark of 1:04.84 set by American Rebecca Soni at last month's world championships in Rome.

Top qualifier Shannon O'Keefe leads a field of 12 bowlers into the final rounds of the U.S. Open women's championship at Sunset Station.

O'Keefe, of Arlington, Texas, gained a first-round bye today along with other top-four bowlers Carolyn Dorin-Ballard of Keller, Texas, Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J., and Tammy Boomershine of North Ogden, Utah.

Elimination matches are scheduled for today and Sunday, culminating with the title match at 6 p.m. Sunday.
