Roy, Trail Blazers agree on five-year extension

Guard Brandon Roy reportedly has agreed to a five-year contract extension with the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Blazers planned a news conference today.

The extension is expected to be worth between $78 million and $82 million.

Roy led the Blazers with 22.6 points and 5.1 assists per game last season.

Also: The Detroit Pistons have signed first-round draft pick Austin Daye.

The Gonzaga forward signed a two-year guaranteed contract. Daye averaged 12.7 points and 6.8 rebounds as a sophomore for the Bulldogs.

The Houston Rockets signed rookie guard Jermaine Taylor to a multiyear contract. Taylor scored 1,979 points at Central Florida and made a school-record 251 3-pointers.

Kurt Rambis was seen boarding a plane Wednesday to meet again with Minnesota Timberwolves officials, a strong sign that the Lakers' assistant coach will be hired to coach the team.

UNLV-UNR rivalry heats up at Legends event

Former UNR golfer Michael Allen wants to clear something up about the friendly rivalry going on this week between former UNLV and Wolf Pack golfers at the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open.

"It's not friendly at all," he said with a smile Wednesday before playing in the pro-am at Montreux Golf and Country Club. "We want to kick their butt, are you kidding me?"

Allen, who won the Senior PGA Championship in May, is one of four Wolf Pack alumni in the field, along with Charlie Wi, Rich Barcelo and Kirk Triplett.

Former UNLV golfers Charley Hoffman, Chris Riley and Bill Lunde also are playing. Riley won the $3 million tournament in 2002 and Triplett in 2003.

"Most of the guys out here, you're friends all the time," Allen said. "But you've got to try to defend the home turf here. It's important. We want to win out here, certainly beat the UNLV guys."

Allen is trying to become the first golfer to win on the PGA Tour after first posting a victory on the senior circuit.

Also: The PGA Tour is returning to the once-elite Greenbrier -- just two months after the resort's new owner promised to bring a major tournament back for the first time in 15 years.

Owner Jim Justice made that pledge in May, and his wish came full-circle with the announcement from PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem. Finchem said the two sides agreed on a six-year contract to bring a tour stop to The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.

Clarett had argued that the sooner he was released, the sooner he could make a comeback.
