Turkoglu, Trail Blazers cut off contract talks

Free-agent forward Hedo Turkoglu and the Portland Trail Blazers have ended contract talks, a person close to the team confirmed Friday.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the negotiations.

An NBA source said Turkoglu will focus on signing a better deal with the Toronto Raptors. He reportedly was offered $50 million for five years by the Blazers.

Turkoglu, a 6-foot-10-inch forward who helped the Orlando Magic to the NBA Finals, arrived in Portland on Thursday to meet Blazers executives and tour the city.

Turkoglu opted out of his Orlando contract last week when the team acquired Vince Carter from New Jersey. Turkoglu was due $7.3 million next season in the final year of his $36 million, six-year deal with Orlando. He averaged 16.8 points and 5.3 rebounds last season.

Earlier in the day, there were reports that Turkoglu had agreed in principle with the Blazers.

Also: The Boston Celtics offered forward Rasheed Wallace a contract as part of a major push to land the coveted forward.

The Boston Globe reported that the Celtics offered Wallace, 35, a deal during a three-hour meeting in Detroit on Thursday.

Wallace averaged 12 points per game last year and probably would play a complementary role in Boston.

Phoenix Mercury standout Diana Taurasi said she's embarrassed after being cited for drunken driving a few hours after she helped her team to victory over the Seattle Storm.

An officer stopped Taurasi early Thursday in Phoenix for speeding, police spokesman Luis Samudio said. The officer smelled alcohol and gave the player several field sobriety tests, according to a police statement.

Taurasi, the WNBA's leading fan vote-getter for the July 25 All-Star Game, then was driven to a mobile DUI van, where she gave a blood sample, then was cited and released. Authorities did not know her blood alcohol content.

Taurasi told reporters that her DUI citation was "just something that's embarrassing and unfortunate for my family and the organization."

Candace Parker will return to action for the Los Angeles Sparks on Sunday when they host the Phoenix Mercury.

The team said that last season's WNBA Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year will be in the lineup for the first time since giving birth to her daughter on May 13.

Ducks' Selanne to play just one more season

Anaheim forward Teemu Selanne says his next NHL season will be his last.

Selanne, a 10-time All-Star, celebrated his 39th birthday Friday. He told the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper in Helsinki, Finland, that a man his age doesn't belong in the NHL.

Also: Boston Bruins forward Mark Recchi expects to play one more season in the NHL.

Recchi, 41, said in a conference call that he probably will retire after next season. He signed a one-year deal with the team Thursday.

Left wing Rick Nash reached an agreement with the Columbus Blue Jackets on an eight-year, $62.4 million contract extension through the 2017-18 season.

The 25-year-old Nash, who would have been an unrestricted free agent after next season, set career and team highs last season with 79 points (40 goals, 39 assists) in leading Columbus to its first trip to the playoffs.

Free agent Mikael Samuelsson signed a $7.5 million, three-year contract with the Vancouver Canucks.

The Swedish right wing spent the past four seasons in Detroit, winning the Stanley Cup in 2008 and falling one game short this past season.

The Pittsburgh Penguins agreed on a one-year contract with forward Ruslan Fedotenko, who joined the team a year ago as a free agent.

The 30-year-old winger had 16 goals and 23 assists in 65 regular-season games, before scoring seven goals in 24 playoff games during the Penguins' run to their third Stanley Cup championship.

The Los Angeles Kings acquired left wing Ryan Smyth from the Colorado Avalanche for defensemen Kyle Quincey and Tom Preissing and a fifth-round draft pick next year.

Smyth, 33, had 26 goals and 33 assists in 77 games last season.

Bowyer claims first Nationwide win of '09

Clint Bowyer won the Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla., for his first victory of the year.

The defending series champion was the leader when a four-car accident brought out the caution with six laps to go. That set up a final two-lap overtime sprint.

Bowyer then held off Kyle Busch when an accident in the fourth turn brought out a race-ending caution.

Busch was second, followed by Carl Edwards, Joey Logano and Kasey Kahne.

Also: Former Hawaii quarterback Timmy Chang, one of the most prolific passers in college football history, was arrested on suspicion of robbery and released without charges pending further investigation.

Chang, 27, was arrested Thursday after a woman alleged her camera was taken away from her while she was filming a brawl last month.

A man, whom Honolulu police say was Chang, told the woman to stop filming the fight. A struggle ensued, and the suspect allegedly took the camera and threw it on the roof of a nearby building.
