Men's golf team falls short of NCAA finals

The 21st-ranked UNLV men's golf team shot a final-round 23-over-par 307 Saturday to finish seventh at the NCAA Southwest Regional in Austin, Texas, falling short of advancing to the NCAA Championships by two spots.

The Rebels finished the three-day event at 40-over 892, four strokes behind fifth-place Michigan. The top five teams and the top individual finisher not on those teams advance to the NCAA Championships.

Advancing to the finals are Florida (874), Texas Tech (876), Texas (877), Stanford (887) and Michigan (888).

Eddie Olson (5-over 218) was UNLV's top individual finisher, placing ninth.

Also: The UNLV softball team was eliminated from the NCAA Los Angeles Regional when Long Beach State's Danielle Linke hit a two-out, two-run homer off the Rebels' Stephanie Bregante in the bottom of the 13th inning for a 3-1 victory.

The Rebels, who ended their season 31-21, trailed 1-0 through five innings before Jaci Hull hit a solo homer to lead off the sixth. UNLV outhit the 49ers 10-9.

Texas Christian jumped to a 4-0 lead after 31/2 innings, and the 14th-ranked Horned Frogs rolled to a 10-3 Mountain West Conference baseball victory over UNLV at Wilson Stadium.

The Rebels, who completed the regular season with a 26-30 overall record and 9-15 mark in MWC play, will be the No. 5 seed in the conference tournament that begins Tuesday at TCU's Lupton Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas. UNLV will play No. 4 seed San Diego State in the opener.

J.J. Sferra led the Rebels against TCU with two of the team's eight hits.

The UNLV women's track and field team placed eighth out of nine teams at the Mountain West Conference Championships in Laramie, Wyo.

Johnson fires 60, leads Texas Open by three

Defending champion Zach Johnson matched the La Cantera course record with a 10-under-par 60 to take a three-stroke lead in the suspended third round of the rain-soaked Texas Open in San Antonio. He is at 15-under 195.

Johnson holed out from 84 yards for an eagle on the par-4 seventh and had eight birdies on the soggy course in the round interrupted by a five-hour rain delay. He tapped in for par on 18 just seconds after the horn blew and darkness suspended play.

Paul Goydos and three-time champion Justin Leonard were 12 under through 12 holes.

Also: Suzann Pettersen and Ji Young Oh shot 3-under 69s, taking a one-stroke lead over Brittany Lincicome after three rounds of the LPGA Sybase Classic in Clifton, N.J.

Pettersen and Oh had 54-hole totals of 12-under 204. Paula Creamer and Michelle Wie shot 69s and were three shots behind the leaders in the $2 million tournament.

Gene Jones and Keith Fergus were in the lead at 10 under when play was suspended by rain in the second round of the Regions Charity Classic in Hoover, Ala.

Rain halted play for 3 hours, 33 minutes in the morning, and it was suspended with the threat of storms looming after Jones was 7 under through 14 holes in his second round. Fergus had finished the front nine in 4 under to join him atop the leaderboard at the Champions Tour.

Irish amateur Shane Lowry bogeyed the final hole to fall into a tie for the lead with England's Robert Rock after three rounds of the Irish Open in Baltray.

Lowry three-putted the par-5 to finish at 1-under 71, leaving him at 16-under 200 entering the final round.

Craig Erickson played a strong front nine and finished with a 2-under-par 70 to take a three-shot lead over Joseph Harrison and Lance Baral after the first round of the Southern Nevada Amateur at Legacy Golf Club in Henderson.

Playing in the Scratch Division, Erickson had three birdies, making the turn at 3-under 33. But he had an up-and-down back nine, making bogey at Nos. 10, 12 and 15, while carding birdies at Nos. 14 and 17.

But it was good enough to keep him in the lead, with Harrison and Baral both coming in at 1-over 73.

In the net division, Edward Pailes led after the first round with a 67.
