Nadal tops Murray in Monte Carlo semis

Top-ranked Rafael Nadal beat Andy Murray 6-2, 7-6 (4) Saturday in the semifinals of the Monte Carlo Masters in Monaco, putting him within one victory of his fifth straight title in this French Open tuneup.

Nadal will play in today's championship against Novak Djokovic, who rallied past Stanislas Wawrinka 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the other semifinal. Djokovic, a French Open semifinalist the past two years, reached his first Monte Carlo final.

Also: Fifth-seeded Caroline Wozniacki advanced to the final of the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, S.C., fighting off a furious rally by Elena Dementieva to defeat the tournament's top seed, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5.

Wozniacki will meet 16th-seeded Sabine Lisicki, who, after ousting Venus Williams last week, defeated sixth-seeded Marion Bartoli 6-3, 6-1 in the other semifinal.

Andy Roddick is now married, a week after Roger Federer tied the knot.

Roddick, the 2003 U.S. Open champion, and Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Brooklyn Decker became husband and wife Friday night at his home in Austin, Texas, a guest at the wedding told The Associated Press.

Gay fires 67, extends lead at Hilton Head

Brian Gay shot 4-under-par 67 and increased his lead to three shots after three rounds of the PGA Tour's Verizon Heritage in Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Gay posted a 13-under 200 total. New Zealand's Tim Wilkinson shot 65 and was three shots back.

Boo Weekley, seeking his third straight win at Harbour Town, is 11 strokes off the lead.

Also: Nick Price moved into position for his first Champions Tour victory, shooting 4-under 67 for a 9-under 133 total and a three-stroke lead heading into the final round of the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am in Lutz, Fla.

First-round leader Larry Nelson (71) was at 136, along with Jay Haas (68) and Mike McCullough (69).

LOCAL COLLEGES

UNLV women's tennis nets regular-season title

The UNLV women's tennis team shut out Brigham Young 6-0 at the Fertitta Tennis Complex to claim its first outright Mountain West Conference regular-season title.

UNLV (18-6, 8-0 MWC) took two of three matches to earn the doubles point, then won all five completed singles matches.

Kristina Nedeltcheva routed McCall Jones 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, and the Rebels also got wins from Nikol Dimitrova, Katy Williams, Adrienn Hidvegi and Anna Maskaljun at Nos. 2 through 5 singles.

Also: The UNLV women's golf team tied for the best round of the day, shooting 12-over 300 to finish third at the Mountain West Conference Championships in Seaside, Calif.

The Rebels had a 56-over 920 total, 17 shots behind winner New Mexico and three behind second-place Texas Christian. UNLV's Therese Koelbaek (76) took third individually at 8-over 224, with Wyoming's Jonelle Martinez winning at 5-over 221.

The UNLV baseball team stretched its winning streak to four, sweeping Northern Colorado 11-1 and 15-2 at Wilson Stadium.

Andrew Beresford (2-2) went eight innings in the opener, and UNLV (19-18) had 17 hits. In the second game, shortened to seven innings, Bryan Resnick went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored to highlight another 17-hit attack.

The UNLV softball team (25-17, 2-6 Mountain West Conference) lost to Brigham Young (32-14, 7-0) 5-2 in Provo, Utah.

UNLV's Lekeisha Lawson finished sixth in the 100-meter dash at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., clocking 11.72 seconds. She was followed by teammate Shahnel Woodley in seventh (11.90).

Olivia Raya set a school record in the weight throw at 174 feet, 8 inches.

The squad also had athletes at the Long Beach Invitational in Long Beach, Calif., where De'Lace Kelly took sixth in the 400 (56.66).

Pitino allegedly victim of extortion attempt

Louisville coach Rick Pitino said he is the victim of an extortion attempt and has forwarded the information to the FBI.

Pitino reported the threats to authorities last month, and the FBI is investigating, the university said in a statement. The statement did not specify the nature of the threats.

Pitino said in the statement he did not plan to talk about the matter but changed his mind after learning the person had gone public.

"I recently learned that the individual behind this extortion attempt has already gone to the media with false, defamatory and outrageous allegations in an attempt to pressure me to cave in to this scheme," Pitino said.

Also: Rich Fellers will try to become the first American in 22 years to win a World Cup Show Jumping title when the World Cup concludes today at the Thomas & Mack Center.

Fellers is fourth in points entering the final round, which begins at noon. Reigning Cup champion Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum of Germany is the points leader.

Fellers gained momentum by winning Saturday's Las Vegas Grand Prix. He made $75,000, but the event did not count toward determining the World Cup title.

Running back Dominic Rhodes agreed to a two-year contact with the Bills, giving Buffalo an established starter while Marshawn Lynch opens next season serving a three-game suspension for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy.

Rhodes is an eight-year veteran who became a free agent this offseason after spending last year with Indianapolis.

NHRA rookie Spencer Massey claimed his first No. 1 spot in Top Fuel qualifying, posting a 3.820-second pass at 311.20 mph in the Summitt Racing Southern Nationals in Commerce, Ga.

Ashley Force Hood (Funny Car), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle) led their divisions.

Sebastian Vettel qualified first for Formula One's Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai, delivering the first pole position for the Red Bull team and the second of the young German's career.

Vettel clocked 1 minute, 36.184 seconds at the Shanghai International Circuit. Renault's Fernando Alonso will start second.
