Rockies acquire righty Guthrie, send two pitchers to Orioles

The Colorado Rockies acquired veteran right-hander Jeremy Guthrie from the Baltimore Orioles on Monday, a move that bolsters their young rotation.

In exchange, the Rockies sent reliever Matt Lindstrom and right-hander Jason Hammel to the Orioles.

Guthrie, the Orioles' opening-day starter three of the last four seasons, lost 17 games last season, the most in the American League, and finished with a 4.33 ERA.

Guthrie, who turns 33 in April, agreed to a one-year, $8.2 million contract with the Rockies, avoiding an arbitration hearing. He's eligible to become a free agent after the season.

Hammel, 29, was solid for the Rockies last season as he was shuffled between the bullpen and the rotation. He was 7-13 with a 4.67 ERA in 32 appearances.

Lindstrom, 27, is a former closer whom the Rockies relied on to bridge the gap to their late-inning relievers. He went 2-2 with a career-best 3.00 ERA in his first season with the team.

Also: Miami Marlins pitcher Anibal Sanchez became the first player to win in salary arbitration this year when a three-person panel awarded him $8 million rather than the team's offer of $6.9 million.

Sanchez, who is eligible for free agency after this season, was 8-9 with a 3.67 ERA in 32 starts last year, when he struck out 202 in 196 1/3 innings. He made $3.7 million.

Right-hander Alfredo Aceves and the Boston Red Sox agreed to a $1.2 million, one-year contract that avoided salary arbitration.

A 30-year-old right-hander, Aceves was 10-2 with a 2.61 ERA and two saves in 51 relief appearances and four starts last season, when he made $750,000.

The Seattle Mariners agreed to a $750,000, one-year contract with Shawn Camp and a $500,000, one-year deal with Hong-Chih Kuo in an attempt to add bullpen depth.

The left-handed Kuo was an All-Star in 2010 with the Los Angeles Dodgers but struggled last season with a back problem early and missed a month with anxiety disorder. During his standout 2010 season, Kuo was 3-2 with 12 saves in 13 chances and had a 1.20 ERA.

Camp, a right-hander, led the Toronto Blue Jays with 67 appearances last year and was 6-3 with a 4.21 ERA.

Left-handed reliever Joe Beimel and first baseman/outfielder Conor Jackson agreed to minor league contracts with the Texas Rangers.

Beimel went 1-1 with a 5.33 ERA in 35 games with Pittsburgh last year. Jackson hit .244 with five home runs and 43 RBIs in 114 games last season with Oakland and Boston, which acquired him at the trade deadline.

The Washington Nationals agreed to a minor league contract with outfielder Rick Ankiel.

If added to the 40-man roster, the 32-year-old Ankiel would have a $1.25 million, one-year contract and could make $1.5 million in performance bonuses. Ankiel batted .239 with nine home runs and 37 RBIs in 122 games last season with Washington.

Light-hitting infielder Alex Cora agreed to a minor league contract with the St. Louis Cardinals and will get an $800,000 deal if added to the 40-man roster.

The 36-year-old Cora played all four infield positions last season for the Washington Nationals while appearing in 91 games and making 16 starts at third base.
