Favre reportedly tells Vikings he won't play

Apparently Brett Favre will remain retired -- for now.

Two days after reports surfaced that Vikings coach Brad Childress was going to meet with the future Hall of Fame quarterback, Favre reportedly told Childress he won't end his second retirement to play in Minnesota. Yahoo! Sports, which first reported the story Thursday on its Web site, cited a source close to the team as saying Favre delivered the news in a call that took place "sometime in the last day."

The call apparently is what caused Childress to cancel a trip to discuss the situation with Favre. Favre's agent, Bus Cook, told ESPN that Favre "is retired" and he doesn't know of any phone conversation or meeting with Childress.

Also: The Cincinnati Bengals signed safety Roy Williams to a one-year contract. He missed most of last season with the Dallas Cowboys after he broke his right forearm twice and was released March 5.

The Bengals also acquired running back Brian Leonard from the St. Louis Rams for reserve defensive tackle Orien Harris.

Former Detroit Lions president Matt Millen is joining ESPN as a football analyst for college games and on NFL studio shows.

The Miami Dolphins are renaming their home Landshark Stadium as part of a partnership with singer Jimmy Buffett.

NHL wants Coyotes' bankruptcy filing tossed

The National Hockey League said it has been in control of the Phoenix Coyotes since November and is asking a federal judge to throw out the team's bankruptcy filing.

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said Coyotes owner Jerry Moyes signed documents giving control of the team to the league. Daly said the documents specifically prohibit Moyes from taking the franchise into bankruptcy.

Daly spoke after a hearing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Phoenix on the franchise's filing for Chapter 11 reorganization on Tuesday. The filing, which came as a surprise to the NHL, includes a plan to sell the team to Canadian businessman Jim Balsillie for $212.5 million and move it to southern Ontario. The NHL wants to keep the team in Arizona.

Also: Pittsburgh police said they've traced an Internet death threat made against Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin to a 17-year-old boy. The posting on a hockey message board read: "I'm killing Ovechkin. I'll go to jail. I don't care anymore."

A police spokesman said the boy lives in Chambersburg, about 125 miles east-southeast of Pittsburgh. State police have talked to the boy, but no charges were immediately filed, the spokesman said.

Canada defeated Latvia 4-2 and Sweden beat the Czech Republic 3-1 in the ice hockey world championship in Bern, Switzerland, setting up a semifinal matchup between the two for the fourth straight year. The United States will play defending champion and tournament favorite Russia in the other semifinal.
