Ducks veteran Selanne to play another season

Ten-time NHL All-Star Teemu Selanne will play another season with the Anaheim Ducks.

Selanne's decision, announced by the Ducks on Saturday, came a day after defenseman Scott Niedermayer, who turns 36 in August, told the team he's coming back. Selanne turns 39 this week.

"Teemu is still playing at a high level, brings passion and energy to the locker room and is a loyal member of this franchise," general manager Bob Murray said in a statement.

The Finnish-born Selanne has played 10 of his 17 NHL seasons with Anaheim and was signed for the 2009-10 season.

He is the Ducks' all-time scoring leader with 352 goals, including 59 game winners, and 743 points.

Also: The Calgary Flames acquired defenseman Jay Bouwmeester from Florida in a deal that sent defenseman Jordan Leopold and a third-round pick in the NHL Draft to the Panthers.

Bouwmeester, 25, had spent his entire career with Florida, which drafted him third overall in 2002. He had 15 goals and 27 assists last season.

The Minnesota Wild traded center Kyle Brodziak to the Edmonton Oilers for fourth-and fifth-round picks in the NHL Draft.

Brodziak, 25, had 27 points in 79 games for the Oilers last season.

SWIMMING

Germany's Steffen sets world mark in 100 free

Germany's Britta Steffen set a world record in the 100-meter freestyle, finishing in 52.56 seconds, in a meet in Berlin.

She shaved 29-hundredths of a second off her previous record of 53.25.

The 25-year-old Steffen's record-setting swim came two days after she broke the previous record set by Australia's Lisbeth Trickett by three-hundredths of a second.

Also: Italy's Federica Pellegrini set a world record in the 400-meter freestyle at the Mediterranean Games in Pescara, Italy.

Pellegrini, the Olympic champion and world-record holder in the 200 freestyle, finished in 4 minutes, 0.41 seconds to lower the mark of Jo Jackson of Britain by 0.25 seconds.

Jackson had a 4:00.65 finish in March at the British swimming championships to break Pellegrini's world record.

TRACK AND FIELD

Merritt, Richards cruise to 400-meter victories

LaShawn Merritt and Sanya Richards made their 400-meter races look like strolls around the track, each cruising to titles at the U.S. championships in Eugene, Ore.

With no Jeremy Wariner in the field, Merritt, who turned 23 on Saturday, was missing his only real rival and quickly pulled away from the field. The Olympic gold medalist, who beat Wariner in Beijing, won in 44.50 seconds, tying his world-best time for 2009.

The real competition was for second, where Gil Roberts held off Kerron Clement. Olympic bronze medalist David Neville finished fifth.

Richards, wearing hot pink shoes and matching top, won her 400 final in 50.05 seconds. It was Richards' fifth national championship and second in a row.

Debbie Dunn took second and Jessica Beard third.

Dwight Phillips, the 2004 Olympic gold medalist, drew the biggest ovation from the crowd when he leapt 28 feet, 1 inch in the long jump on his second attempt to win the event.
