BYU coach Rose says cancer appears gone

Just weeks after learning he had pancreatic cancer, Brigham Young basketball coach Dave Rose said Wednesday at a news conference that doctors appear to have gotten all the cancerous tumor during emergency surgery to remove his spleen.

Because there are no signs of cancer remaining, Rose, 51, said he won't have to go through chemotherapy this summer. He plans to be back for a fifth season with the Cougars but will take the summer off from recruiting.

Also: Freshman guard Elliot Williams, who started 11 of Duke's final 12 games last season, is leaving the Blue Devils because of unspecified family medical reasons. Williams, who averaged 4.2 points and 2.3 rebounds, plans to transfer closer to his hometown of Memphis, Tenn.

A hairline fracture in Yao Ming's left foot has not responded to the treatment program, prompting the Houston Rockets to declare the All-Star center is sidelined indefinitely. The team initially said Yao would miss eight to 12 weeks after he was hurt May 8.

Golden State has agreed to trade guard Jamal Crawford to the Atlanta Hawks for point guards Speedy Claxton and Acie Law, Warriors sources confirmed. The deal can't go through until Wednesday, when the 2009-10 NBA season officially begins.

Mountain West jilted by BCS on playoff plan

Bowl Championship Series presidents have rejected the Mountain West Conference's playoff plan.

The MWC proposed an eight-team playoff system that would allow greater access to the national championship game to teams outside the six most powerful leagues.

"There was no overall support for the proposal, although some conferences were interested in considering certain elements of it in the future -- particularly those related to revenue, access and governance of the BCS arrangement," said Oregon president David Frohnmayer, the outgoing presidential oversight committee chairman.

Also: Defensive end Julius Peppers signed his one-year, $16.7 million tender with the Carolina Panthers, five months after the four-time Pro Bowl selection announced he wanted to play elsewhere. Peppers had a career-high 14 sacks last season.

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Greg Jennings signed a three-year, $27 million contract extension. He reportedly received $16 million in guaranteed money.

Linebacker Michael Boley, who signed a five-year, $25 million contract with the New York Giants as a free agent, had arthroscopic hip surgery to repair a torn labrum and is expected to miss the start of training camp. A full recovery is expected to take eight to 10 weeks.
