Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. retained the WBC middleweight title, earning a unanimous decision over fellow Mexican Marco Antonio Rubio in San Antonio.

The judges scored the bout 118-110, 116-112 and 115-113 for Chavez (45-0-1), which drew a mixed reaction from the 14,120 in attendance Saturday at the Alamodome.

Neither fighter went down despite taking continuous heavy blows to the head and body throughout the 12-round bout.

Chavez overcame a gutsy performance by Rubio (53-6-1).

On the undercard, Nonito Donaire (28-1) took a split decision over Wilfredo Vazquez (21-2-1) to win the WBO junior featherweight title.

Also: Yoan Pablo Hernandez of Cuba successfully defended his IBF cruiserweight title with a unanimous decision against Steve Cunningham in their rematch in Frankfurt, Germany.

The southpaw twice had Cunningham on the canvas in the fourth round after catching the American with lefts. Cunningham remained unsteady after receiving a count, but he somehow recovered to see out the round.

Hernandez (26-1) tried to finish him off in the fifth, but Cunningham (24-4) sent him reeling back.

Cunningham improved in the later rounds but was unable to make up for the knockdown. The judges scored it 116-110, 116-110 and 115-111.
