Pedregon nabs second consecutive NHRA race

Tony Pedregon raced to his second straight Funny Car victory Sunday, beating Ashley Force Hood in the final of the United Association NHRA SuperNationals in Englishtown, N.J.

Larry Dixon (Top Fuel), Jeg Coughlin (Pro Stock) and Craig Treble (Pro Stock Motorcycle) won their divisions.

Also: Reigning NASCAR truck champion Johnny Benson was in serious but stable condition after a fiery crash Saturday night during a Super Modified race in Marne, Mich.

Benson, 45, sustained multiple injuries, including burns and broken ribs, after his car slammed into a guardwall and burst into flames after being hit by another car on the second lap.

Peugeot driver Marc Gene of Spain won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France, ending Audi's five-year domination. Gene, David Brabham of Britain and Alexander Wurz of Austria completed 382 laps in 24 hours.

Jeff Connors won Saturday's 40-lap Super Late Models race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway's Bullring to post his second feature victory this season.

Other winners were Doug Hamm (Modifieds), Matt Johnson (Chargers), Bronson Butcher (Legends) and Billy Grasser (Bombers).

Murray tops Blake, wins first grass-court crown

Top-seeded Andy Murray defeated James Blake 7-5, 6-4 to win the Aegon Championships at Queen's Club in London for his first grass-court title.

Murray became the first British player to win the event since Bunny Austin in 1938.

Also: Tommy Haas of Germany upset second-seeded Novak Djokovic of Serbia 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-1 to win the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany, for his first grass-court title.

Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia won her first WTA Tour title with a 6-0, 7-6 (2) victory over Li Na of China in the Aegon Classic in Birmingham, England.

MISCELLANEOUS

Golfer Green will have partial leg amputation

Champions Tour golfer Ken Green, who was injured in a recreational vehicle crash last week in Mississippi that killed his brother and girlfriend, will have his lower right leg amputated today, his agent said.

Kevin Richardson said doctors determined it would take two years of surgery to repair a limb before Green, 50, could walk again.

Also: Doug Pool followed a first-round 67 with a 68 to win the Southern Nevada Golf Association Championship, the SNGA's second "major" of the season, at Boulder Creek Golf Club. His 135 total gave him a two-stroke victory over Alex Lyon. Tom Seidl won the net division at 134.

Three-time heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis and two others were inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, N.Y.

Lewis, who retired in 2003 with a 41-2-1 record with 32 knockouts, was joined by U.S. bantamweight champion Orlando Canizales and South African junior lightweight champ Brian Mitchell.

UConn basketball coach Jim Calhoun was released from a Connecticut hospital after spending the night following a bicycle accident that broke five ribs. Calhoun, 67, broke the ribs during a charity ride Saturday when he hit a pothole and went over the handlebars.

U.S. swimming star Michael Phelps finished second in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke at the Santa Clara International Grand Prix in California. Canadian Brent Hayden won the 100 free, and Ryan Lochte, Phelps' Olympic teammate, took the 100 back.

Defending champion England defeated the U.S. rugby team 56-17 at the Churchill Cup in Glendale, Colo. England will play for the title Sunday.
