Murray outlasts Nadal to win ABN Amro title

Second-seeded Andy Murray knocked off an injured Rafael Nadal 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 on Sunday to become the first British winner at the ABN Amro tournament in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

The top-ranked Nadal was bothered by a right knee injury and had to call a medical timeout in the second set before opting to continue.

Also: Amelie Mauresmo of France outlasted Elena Dementieva of Russia 7-6 (7), 2-6, 6-4 in the final of the Open GDF Suez in Paris for her first WTA Tour title in two years.

Fourth-seeded Radek Stepanek won his second ATP title this year, rallying to beat fifth-seeded Mardy Fish 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 at the SAP Open in San Jose, Calif.

The city of Dubai, United Arab Emirates, blocked top Israeli player Shahar Peer from traveling to the country for a major women's tournament, tour organizers said, which could damage the city's efforts to continue attracting high-profile sports events.

Peer broke barriers last year in Qatar, becoming the first Israeli woman to play in a WTA Tour tournament in a region trying to enhance its reputation as an international sports hub.

Struggling Penguins fire coach Therrien

The Pittsburgh Penguins fired coach Michel Therrien, less than a year after he led the team to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Dan Bylsma, coach of the team's AHL affiliate, was installed as interim coach for the rest of the season.

Even with star scorers Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby, the Penguins are just 27-25-5 this season. They're in 10th place in the Eastern Conference, five points out of the final playoff spot.

Also: Mike Green's NHL-record goals streak for defensemen ended at eight games, but Alexander Ovechkin scored three times to give the Washington Capitals a 4-2 victory over the Florida Panthers in Sunrise, Fla.

Bills' Lynch arrested on gun possession charge

Authorities say Buffalo Bills running back Marshawn Lynch was arrested in Culver City, Calif., on a weapons possession charge.

Culver City police said in a statement that Lynch was arrested after officers confronted him and two other men in a car and found a loaded firearm in the vehicle.

Lynch was arrested Wednesday for possession of a concealed firearm after officers determined the gun belonged to him. He was released on $35,000 bail.

Also: Lance Armstrong persevered in the Tour of California to finish near the front of a rain-plagued 107-mile first stage, won by Spain's Francisco Mancebo.

The stage went from Davis to Santa Rosa, Calif.

Some time after Armstrong finished 10th in Saturday's prologue, his time-trial bike was stolen from the Team Astana trailer in Sacramento.

The UNLV softball team (5-4) lost two games to close out its Desert Classic, falling to Kentucky 7-1 and UNR 9-0 at Eller Media Stadium.

Yelena Isinbayeva broke her own indoor world pole vault record, first clearing 16 feet, 31/2 inches and then 16-43/4 at the Pole Vault Stars in Donetsk, Ukraine.

Jesse Brinkley of Yerington retained his U.S. National Boxing Championship super middleweight title Saturday night in Reno with a unanimous decision over Joey Gilbert of Reno in a matchup of rivals from the 2005 reality TV series, "The Contenders."

Ralph Kaplowitz, who played in the first NBA game in 1946 for the New York Knicks and was on the league's first championship team, died Feb. 2 in Floral Park, N.Y., at age 89.
