Tasca wins Funny Car title at NHRA event

Bob Tasca raced to his first career Funny Car victory Sunday at the ACDelco NHRA Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla.

Tasca, in his second-year in the NHRA, earned his first No. 1 qualifying position Saturday and ran strong all weekend. He finished the job by powering his Ford Mustang to a final-round performance of 4.2 seconds at a top speed of 280.72 mph to hold off defending Gatornationals winner Tony Pedregon, whose Chevy Impala trailed with a 4.536 at 210.90.

Larry Dixon (Top Fuel), Jason Line (Pro Stock) and Hector Arana (Pro Stock Motorcycle) won their respective divisions.

Also: Brian Collins of Las Vegas drove his SCORE Trophy-Truck to the overall title Saturday in the SCORE San Felipe 250 in Baja California, Mexico, winning for the second straight year.

He averaged 61.21 mph along the 232-mile course to top a field of 226 racers, including NASCAR regular Robby Gordon, who finished second.

Bradley tops field at PGA's Puerto Rico stop

Michael Bradley won the PGA Tour's Puerto Rico Open by one shot over hard-charging Brett Quigley and Jason Day after sinking an 11-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.

Bradley shot 2-under 70, finishing at 14-under 274, to outlast Quigley -- who fired a 67 -- and Day (71) at Trump International Golf Club. It was Bradley's third PGA Tour victory and first since 1998.

Also: Dan Forsman won the AT&T Champions Classic for his first victory in 12 Champions Tour starts, overcoming a five-stroke deficit in regulation and beating Don Pooley with a birdie on the first extra hole in Santa Clarita, Calif.

Forsman, five strokes behind Joey Sindelar entering the round, shot 6-under 66 -- the best round of the day -- to match Pooley (70) at 11-under 205 before winning in the playoff.

MISCELLANEOUS

UNLV softball team nets ninth straight win

The UNLV softball team notched its ninth straight win, beating UC Davis 5-3 in the championship game of National Invitational Tournament in San Jose, Calif.

Brittany Meade's line-drive RBI single in the fifth inning proved to be the game-winning hit, putting the Rebels up 4-3. Laura Briones followed with an RBI on a fielder's choice.

Meade finished 2-for-3, and Stephanie Bregante got the win, allowing two inherited runners to score before shutting down the Aggies the rest of the way.

UNLV (21-8) went 5-0 in the tournament.

Also: The UNLV baseball team gave up the last 13 runs of the game, including seven in the fifth inning, in a 15-2 loss to host San Diego State.

The Rebels (11-6, 0-3 Mountain West Conference) got swept in the three-game series after entering the weekend on an eight-game win streak. UNLV got both its runs in the second inning, with Jarred Frierson scoring on a wild pitch and Chad Claus delivering an RBI sacrifice fly, tying the game at 2.

Top-ranked Rafael Nadal needed just 1 hour, 7 minutes to beat Michael Berrer of Germany 6-2, 6-1 in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif.

American Mardy Fish, last year's runner-up, lost to Jeremy Chardy of France, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (1).

In the women's draw, top-seeded Dinara Safina, No. 4 Vera Zvonareva of Russia, No. 9 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark and unseeded American Jill Craybas all won their third-round matches.

Chris Osgood made 23 saves for his 49th career shutout as the Detroit Red Wings beat the host Columbus Blue Jackets 4-0 to become the first team in NHL history to top 100 points in nine straight seasons.
