Phillies, Werth reach terms on two-year pact

Outfielder Jayson Werth and the Philadelphia Phillies reached a preliminary agreement on a $10 million, two-year contract, a person familiar with the agreement said Wednesday.

Philadelphia also announced a one-year contract with reliever Chad Durbin worth $1,635,000.

Werth's deal was disclosed by a person who spoke on the condition of anonymity, because it is subject to a physical.

Also: Right fielder Nick Markakis' $66.1 million, six-year contract was finalized by the Baltimore Orioles.

Veteran catcher Brad Ausmus and the Los Angeles Dodgers agreed on a one-year contract worth $1 million.

Texas Rangers right-hander Eric Hurley, a former first-round pick who made his major league debut last year, had surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff and probably will miss the 2009 season.

PETA withdraws offer to shoot ad with Vick

PETA has withdrawn an offer to televise an anti-dogfighting public service announcement with Michael Vick after his release from prison.

The organization said an agreement was reached with Vick's representatives to shoot the spot, but that Vick's attorneys sought assurance from PETA that the group would support Vick's return to the NFL. PETA wouldn't agree to that arrangement.

Also: New Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz hired veteran assistant Gunther Cunningham as defensive coordinator.

Tennessee Titans quarterback Kerry Collins will make his second Pro Bowl trip, as a replacement for Brett Favre on the AFC squad.

Shane Dronett, who played 10 years in the NFL as a defensive lineman and started every game for the Atlanta Falcons' 1998 Super Bowl team, was found dead at his suburban Atlanta home. He was 38.

The cause of death had not been determined.

Perez fires 61 to take lead at Bob Hope event

Pat Perez shot 11-under-par 61 to take the lead in the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic on a warm, still day in La Quinta, Calif., though his score was only good enough for a one-shot lead.

Mike Weir and Bubba Watson opened the five-day tournament with 62s, and six players were at 63.

Also: Stanford athletic director Bob Bowlsby confirmed reports that he expects a "large number" of cuts at the school to deal with a projected $5 million in lost revenue in the next three years. Bowlsby didn't offer specifics on cuts.

North Carolina State women's basketball coach Kay Yow is continuing her cancer treatments in a hospital.

Alabama guard Ronald Steele has decided to skip the rest of his senior season after sustaining a foot injury, ending his college basketball career.
