Athletics, Duchscherer reach one-year deal

The Oakland Athletics agreed to terms on a $3.9 million, one-year contract Saturday with right-hander Justin Duchscherer, the club's last remaining roster player eligible for arbitration.

Duchscherer, a two-time All-Star who was sidelined by a strained right hip late in the season, went 10-8 with a 2.54 ERA in 22 starts for Oakland. It was his first year as a full-time starter.

Also: Brandon Lyon agreed to a $4.25 million, one-year contract with the Detroit Tigers. Lyon, who had 26 saves for the Diamondbacks last season, will have a chance to replace the retired Todd Jones at the end of Detroit's games.

FIGURE SKATING

Veteran Czisny lands women's national title

Alissa Czisny made a rebound for the ages, winning the women's title at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Cleveland.

The 21-year-old, who just last year finished a disastrous ninth, wasn't perfect, falling on one jump and watering down another. But her elegant program was still superior to the highly touted up-and-comers who were supposed to turn these nationals into their coming out party.

Czisny finished with 178.06 points, easily beating reigning world junior champion Rachael Flatt.

UNLV

Against Missouri-Kansas City, UNLV won all six singles matches.

Freshman Mehdi Bouras, substituting for Wronski at the top slot, beat Bret Berryman 6-2, 6-2, and UNLV lost just one set in singles play.

Also: The UNLV women's tennis team beat New Mexico State 7-0 in its season opener at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

The Rebels swept the three doubles matches for the first point, then won all six singles matches, led by Kristina Nedeltcheva's 6-3, 6-2 win over Sophia Marks at the top spot.
