COLLEGE FOOTBALL
UNLV lands two recruits, including top linebacker
The UNLV football team picked up two impressive oral commitments Wednesday.
Linebacker Jordan Barrett, a three-star prospect by Scout.com and Rivals.com, orally committed to UNLV after also receiving scholarship offers from Notre Dame and Washington.
Barrett (6 feet 2 inches, 225 pounds), of Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, Calif., is rated by Scout as the nation's No. 12 strong-side linebacker. Rivals ranks him the country's No. 47 inside linebacker and No. 85 prospect in California.
Offensive tackle Thomas Kilgore (6-5, 305) of San Joaquin Memorial High in Fresno, Calif., chose the Rebels over UNR and San Diego State. He visited all three schools.
Kilgore, who visited UNLV last weekend, said the coaching staff made the difference, especially wide receivers coach Kris Cinkovich, who recruited him.
Also: Bobby Bowden signed a one-year contract to coach a 34th season at Florida State, prolonging his duel with Penn State's Joe Paterno to see who will retire as college football's all-time leader in wins.
BOXING
Margarito suspended due to glove incident
Boxer Antonio Margarito was temporarily suspended along with his trainer, Javier Capetillo, after the California State Athletic Commission announced it found a "foreign substance" in the boxer's hand wraps before his Saturday night loss to Shane Mosley at Staples Center, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Margarito and Capetillo have been ordered to appear at a Feb. 10 hearing.
Also: Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton formally agreed to fight for Hatton's 140-pound title on May 2, ending several weeks of negotiating and posturing.
Pacquiao, generally considered the world's top pound-for-pound fighter, will go after Hatton's IBO junior welterweight belt at the MGM Grand Garden.
