Serena, Venus, Nadal roll to Sony victories
Top-ranked Serena Williams, seeking her fifth Sony Ericsson Open title, won her opening match Saturday, beating fellow American Alexa Glatch, 6-2, 6-3, at Key Biscayne, Fla.
Fifth-seeded Venus Williams also won her opener, beating Shahar Peer, 6-3, 6-3.
Top-ranked Rafael Nadal opened a bid for his first Key Biscayne men's title by beating Teimuraz Gabashvili, 6-2, 6-2.
It was hardly a banner day for American men, who went 0-5, with all the losses in three sets. Sam Querrey, John Isner, Amer Delic and Bobby Reynolds were beaten by seeded opponents, and No. 27 Mardy Fish also lost, leaving four U.S. males to start the third round.
GOLF
Shin surges to lead in Phoenix LPGA event
Jiyai Shin, 20, moved into position for her second LPGA Tour victory this month and fifth in eight months, shooting 6-under 66 to take a one-stroke lead after the third round of the J Golf Phoenix LPGA International at Phoenix.
Shin had a 10-under 206 total on the Papago Golf Course. After winning three LPGA Tour titles last year, including the Women's British Open, she won the HSBC Women's Champions this month in Singapore.
Im-Kyung Kim, the leader after the first two rounds, shot 71 and fell into a second-place tie with Karrie Webb (69) at 207. Two-time defending champion Lorena Ochoa (70) was at 2-under 214.
Also: Two-time major winner Mark O'Meara roared into position for his first Champions Tour win, matching the Cap Cana Championship scoring record with a 7-under 65 at Cap Cana, Dominican Republic.
Eduardo Romero and Keith Fergus joined O'Meara atop the leaderboard after the second round at 8-under 136.
LOCAL COLLEGES
UNLV women's tennis edges Texas Christian
The UNLV women's tennis team defeated No. 32 Texas Christian 4-3 in a match played at San Diego State.
TCU swept the three doubles matches for the first point, but the Rebels (11-6) won four of six singles matches.
Kristina Nedeltcheva outlasted Macall Harkins 7-6, 7-6 at No. 1 singles, and UNLV also got victories from Nikol Dimitrova (No. 2), Adrienn Hidvegi (No. 4) and Alisa Razina, who clinched the match with a three-set win at the No. 6 slot.
Also: The UNLV men's tennis team beat Air Force 7-0 at Air Force Academy, Colo.
The Rebels (12-7) took all three doubles matches for the first point, then lost only one set while sweeping the singles. Elliot Wronski beat Austin Francis 6-3, 7-5 at No. 1 singles.
The UNLV baseball team lost to Long Beach State 4-0 at Long Beach, Calif.
J.J. Sferra and Ryan Thornton each singled for the Rebels (13-12), but those were the only hits for UNLV. Long Beach starter Jake Thompson allowed one hit and no walks, with two strikeouts, in eight innings. The 49ers had 10 hits.
UNLV's three entrants competing on the final day of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships fell short of reaching the finals.
Akos Molnar placed 22nd in the 200-yard breaststroke, Kier Maitland finished 29th in the 1,650 freestyle and the 400 freestyle relay team just missed a spot in the consolation final, taking 18th.
Auburn won the team championship with 526 points.
The UNLV women's golf team was second after the first two rounds of the Mountain View Collegiate at Tucson, Ariz., posting a 2-over-par 578 total, seven shots behind leader San Jose State.
Therese Koelbaek led the Rebels at 3-under 141, tied for fourth but only one shot out of first, with San Jose State's Erica Moston and Cristina Corpus tied with Louisville's Cindy LaCrosse at 140.
The College of Southern Nevada baseball team swept Salt Lake Community College, winning 8-6 and 2-1 at Morse Stadium.
In the opener, Marvin Campbell was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs for the Coyotes (24-12, 16-4 Scenic West Athletic Conference). Chase Bradford earned the win, allowing one run on four hits and a walk, with four strikeouts. He exited with an 8-1 lead after five innings.
In the second game, Joe Robinson pitched a seven-inning complete game, allowing two hits and three walks, with three strikeouts.
MISCELLANEOUS
U.S. men's soccer rallies for tie with El Salvador
Jozy Altidore ignited the comeback in the 77th minute, and Frankie Hejduk scored the tying goal in the 88th as the United States rallied for a 2-2 draw with El Salvador in a World Cup qualifier at San Salvador, El Salvador.
Tiny El Salvador, ranked 106th in the world, built a 2-0 lead against the No. 17 Americans before a boisterous crowd of 30,500 on goals by Eliseo Quintanilla in the 15th minute and Crisian Castillo in the 72nd.
Also: David Beckham broke England's appearance record for a nongoalkeeper and set up a goal with a trademark cross in a 4-0 exhibition victory over Slovakia at Wembley, England.
Beckham entered his 109th game at the start of the second half, surpassing the mark he shared with former England captain Bobby Moore.
Diego Maradona won his first official match as Argentina's coach, a 4-0 victory over Venezuela in a World Cup qualifier at Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Dave Bonk and Bruce Graham scored twice each, carrying the Bakersfield Condors to a 7-4 victory over the Las Vegas Wranglers in the ECHL at Bakersfield, Calif.
Mick Lawrence, Chris Neiszner, Justin Taylor and Jason Dest scored for Las Vegas (32-30-8).
Also, forward Justin Taylor returned to the Wranglers from Chicago of the American Hockey League, while left wing Kelly Czuy was recalled to Springfield of the AHL.
Kim Yu-na gave South Korea its first title at the World Figure Skating Championships, finishing with a record 207.71 points in Los Angeles.
Yu-na was more than 16 points ahead of Canada's Joannie Rochette and beat main rival and fourth-place finisher Mao Asada of Japan by almost 20. Japan's Miki Ando took the bronze.
Rachael Flatt finished fifth and Alissa Czisny 11th, meaning the United States can send only two women to the Vancouver Olympics.
Three days after surgery to fix his broken right collarbone, Lance Armstrong posted a photo of himself training on his Twitter feed.
"Got on the spin bike for half an hour today," the seven-time Tour de France champion wrote.
The American cyclist, 37, was expected to resume training almost immediately to meet his goal of racing in the Giro d'Italia, which begins May 9. He also plans to ride in the Tour de France in July, his first since 2005.
