South Korean Shin fires 67, leads LPGA event

South Korean Ji-Yai Shin shot a 5-under-par 67 to take the first-round lead in the LPGA Tour's Samsung World Championship in Half Moon Bay, Calif.

The 20-year-old Shin, who won the Women's British Open in August, leads Paula Creamer by one stroke.

Lorena Ochoa and Annika Sorenstam were 17 minutes into their rounds and on the second fairway as the last twosome to start when the horn sounded and play was suspended for 26 minutes because of dense fog. It was eerie at times in the fog, with the crash of ocean waves serving as background noise as players searched for the flag before they hit.

Ochoa, the world No. 1 and two-time defending Samsung champion, and five-time winner Sorenstam each missed tough birdie putts on 18 to finish in a group at 69.

Also: Jeff Overton shot a 5-under 67 to take the first-round lead at the Turning Stone Resort Championship in Verona, N.Y., the second stop on the PGA Tour's Fall Series. Overton leads Michael Allen and Steve Allan by one stroke.
