Sorenstam moves up at Ochoa Invitational

Annika Sorenstam made up five strokes on leader Angela Stanford at the Lorena Ochoa Invitational, shooting 5-under 67 Saturday to cut her deficit to just a stroke with one round left in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Making her second-to-last start before leaving the LPGA Tour, Sorenstam eagled the par-5 10th hole and added six birdies to post a 9-under 207 total. Stanford (72) was at 206.

Tournament host and top-ranked Lorena Ochoa was at 214 after a 2-under 70.

Also: Erik Compton, playing six months after a second heart transplant, failed to advance by one shot in the second stage of PGA Tour qualifying after he closed with a 1-over 73 in Brooksville, Fla.

Compton finished 22nd, but only the top 20 and ties from each of four second-stage sites advanced to the final stage of Q-school next month in California.

Taylor pounds Lacy in WBC eliminator bout

Jermain Taylor dominated Jeff Lacy to win a 12-round unanimous decision in a WBC super middleweight eliminator fight in Nashville, Tenn.

Taylor (28-2-1, 17 KOs), the former undisputed middleweight champion, used strong left and right jabs to keep Lacy (23-2, 17 KOs) off balance and seemed to land punches at will throughout the bout.

Two judges scored the fight 119-109 for Taylor, and the third had it 118-110.

Also: David Haye (22-1) made an easy jump from cruiserweight to heavyweight in London, flooring Monte Barrett (34-7) five times in five rounds to earn a knockout win.

Davydenko, Djokovic reach Masters Cup final

Russian Nikolay Davydenko reached the Masters Cup final in Shanghai, China, with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Andy Murray, who seemed exhausted from his upset of Roger Federer a day earlier.

Davydenko will play for the title today against Novak Djokovic, who rallied to oust France's Gilles Simon, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Now, Davydenko gets another opponent who is less than fresh -- Djokovic needed nearly three hours to defeat Simon.

Also: Dave van den Bergh scored in the 28th minute, and the New York Red Bulls defeated Real Salt Lake 1-0 in Major League Soccer's Western Conference final in Sandy, Utah, to reach the MLS Cup for the first time in the club's history.

New York will take on the Columbus Crew, also playing for the MLS Cup for the first time, on Nov. 23 in Carson, Calif.

Anaheim Ducks defenseman Francois Beauchemin will miss six months after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in Friday's 4-3 overtime loss to Nashville.

American swimmer Peter Marshall broke his own world record in the 100-meter backstroke on the first day of the short-course World Cup meet in Berlin.

Marshall clocked 49.64 seconds, 0.30 faster than the record he set earlier in the week in Stockholm -- where he also broke the 50 backstroke record.

Jenni Shearer led the UNLV cross country team at the NCAA West Regional in Stanford, Calif., taking 36th in the 206-runner field.

Shearer covered the 6-kilometer course in 21 minutes, 11.67 seconds. UNLV took 26th in the 30-team meet.

The UNLV men's swimming and diving team beat Utah 196-98, but the women's team lost to the Utes 179-121 at Buchanan Natatorium.

John Mendoza (1,000-yard freestyle, 500 freestyle), Calan Eldridge (100, 200 freestyle), Andrew Morrell (100, 200 breaststroke), Nick Blank (200 backstroke, 400 individual medley) and David Seiler (100, 200 butterfly) each won two events for the Rebels.

Bailey Kuestermeyer (500 free, 400 IM) won two events for the women's team and was second in the 1,000 freestyle.
