Wranglers fall to Aces in season opener, 4-1
Collin Hemmingway scored a pair of goals and added an assist Friday night as the Alaska Aces beat the Wranglers 4-1 in Anchorage in the ECHL opener for both teams.
The Wranglers' goal came in the first period by rookie Mick Lawrence and briefly tied the score at 1-all.
Las Vegas finsihed 0-for-7 on the power play.
The Wranglers lost starting goaltender John DeCaro to an undisclosed injury in the second period.
Also: Steve Yzerman will be appointed executive director of Canada's hockey team for the 2010 Vancouver Games. The Detroit Red Wings executive replaces Wayne Gretzky, who had the job for the past two Olympics.
Hockey Canada will introduce Yzerman today in Ottawa, where the team's management staff for the Winter Games will be announced.
Defenseman Matt Greene signed a five-year extension with the Los Angeles Kings through the 2013-14 season.
Greene, 25, is in his first season with the Kings after spending three years with Edmonton and was named one of the Kings' assistant captains this month.
Columbus Blue Jackets center Michael Peca's suspension for making contact with an official was cut to five games by the NHL.
Peca was suspended for confronting an official after he thought he had been slew-footed in the Blue Jackets' Oct. 10 opener at Dallas -- subsequently grabbing the official's arm to argue his case.
Originally deemed a Category II penalty that requires a 10-game suspension, it was ultimately cut in half after the league looked at video of the offense.
BASEBALL
Brewers won't retain Sveum as manager
Doug Melvin will get a three-year contract extension as general manager of the Milwaukee Brewers, but the team said Dale Sveum is no longer under consideration to become manager.
Sveum was promoted from his coaching position and served as interim manager after Ned Yost was fired with 12 games left in the regular season.
The Brewers reached the postseason for the first time since 1982, but lost to Philadelphia in four games in the opening round of the National League playoffs.
The Brewers went 7-5 under Sveum, clinching the wild-card berth on the final day of the regular season.
Melvin said he would recommend to the next manager that Sveum stay on the coaching staff. He was the third-base coach before the late-season promotion.
Also: New York Yankees ace Chien-Ming Wang threw 25 pitches in his first session off a bullpen mound since hurting his foot in June.
Wang partially tore a tendon and sprained his right foot running the bases during the Yankees' 13-0 interleague win at Houston on June 15.
"It's better. It's good," Wang said in Tampa, Fla.
Rick Knapp was hired as Detroit Tigers pitching coach.
Knapp joins the coaching staff after 12 seasons as the minor league pitching coordinator for the Minnesota Twins.
Scott Boras won a $550,000 decision against Gary Sheffield of the Tigers when an arbitrator decided the agent should be paid for eliminating a 2004 option that allowed the outfielder to become a free agent.

Lang, Pettersen share lead in Kapalua Classic
Brittany Lang shot a 1-under-par 71 for a share of the second-round lead with Suzann Pettersen in the inaugural Kapalua LPGA Classic in Kapalua, Hawaii.
Lang stayed aggressive despite the breezes that frustrated many players, birdieing Nos. 11 and 13 to match Pettersen (72) at 4-under 140.
Annika Sorenstam followed her opening 77 with a 70 to make it to the weekend.
Also: Andy Bean hit all 18 greens in regulation and shot a 7-under 65 to take the first-round lead in the Administaff Small Business Classic in The Woodlands, Texas.
Bean had a one-stroke lead over Jay Haas and Joey Sindelar in the Champions Tour event.
Wales' Stuart Manley shot a 4-under 68 to take a one-stroke lead over Spain's Alvaro Quiros after two rounds of the Portugal Masters in Vilamoura. Manley is at 11-under 133.

Hughes, Moore lead women's soccer team
Shannon Hughes and Brianna Moore scored second-half goals to power the Rebels women's soccer team to a 3-1 Mountain West Conference victory over Wyoming at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
The Rebels, who received a first-half goal from Ashleigh Shoughro, improved to 2-2 in the league and 10-5-1 overall.
Also: Stephen Sifuentes and Daniel Cruz scored goals 52 seconds apart as the Rebels men's soccer team beat New Mexico 2-1 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Johann Field.
Goalkeeper Hawk Mummey stopped two of three shots for UNLV (6-4-1, 3-2).
Luca Barlocchi outlasted Montana State's Corey Smith 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 to advance to today's semifinals of the ITA Region 7 Men's Tennis Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
In doubles play, Barlocchi and partner Elliot Wronski won their round-of-16 match before falling to Brigham Young's tandem of Cassidy Mears-Thomas Shubert 8-3 in the quarterfinals.
Therese Koelbaek fired a 3-under-par 68 to stand in a four-way tie for third after the first-round of the three-day Stanford Intercollegiate in Palo Alto, Calif.
The Rebels are tied for 10th in the 16-team field after shooting a 3-over 287, 10 strokes behind leader and third-ranked UCLA.

Cavaliers guard West fighting mood disorder
Cleveland Cavaliers guard Delonte West contemplated quitting before leaving the team's training camp to seek help for depression and "a mood disorder" he has been battling his entire life.
West, who recently signed a two-year contract with Cleveland, said he removed himself from the team to "get my thoughts back together." He missed three preseason games during his absence from Oct. 4 to Wednesday.
"I felt a feeling of anger, and I just wanted to throw it all away and quit the team," he said.
West, 25, said he had been troubled by his behavior toward a high school referee during a scrimmage at the Cavs' training facility Oct. 3. West took out his frustrations on the official, and he said the incident was a warning signal for him to seek treatment to combat an illness that has troubled him for years.
Also: Tennis rivals Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer stayed on track to meet in another final by winning their quarterfinals in straight sets at the Madrid Masters.
Top-ranked Nadal downed Spanish countryman Feliciano Lopez 6-4, 6-4, and second-ranked Federer eliminated ninth-seeded Juan Martin del Potro, 6-3, 6-3.
In today's semifinals, Nadal will meet Gilles Simon, and Federer will face fourth-seeded Andy Murray in a replay of the U.S. Open final.
Venus Williams beat Francesca Schiavone of Italy 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the Zurich Open in Zurich, Switzerland.
Williams, seeded third, won the tournament in 1999. In a semifinal match today, Williams will face second-seeded Ana Ivanovic.
Jamie Bestwick won the BMX Vert competition night in the PlayStation Pro in Orlando, Fla., to become the first competitor to win four consecutive Dew Cups as the season champion.
Earlier, Ryan Nyquist won the BMX Park competition to end Daniel Dhers' winning streak at four.
