Cheyenne point guard commits to Kansas

Cheyenne High School point guard Elijah Johnson orally committed to attend Kansas on a basketball scholarship, according to a report Saturday on the Lawrence Journal-World's Web site.

Johson, rated the nation's 27th-best recruit by Rivals.com, was in Lawrence this weekend on an official recruiting visit.

"I'm pretty excited," Johnson told the Journal- World. "It was the best choice out there for me. In my opinion, it's the best place to be."

Kansas won the NCAA championship last season.

Also: Utah Jazz guard Deron Williams left an exhibition game against the Chicago Bulls after falling awkwardly and spraining his left ankle in the first quarter in Chicago.

Williams had X-rays, which were negative, but he did not return. The Jazz won, 88-80.

Cleveland Cavaliers rookie forward Darnell Jackson, who played for NCAA champion Kansas last season, is out indefinitely with a fractured left wrist.

Nick Weatherspoon, a former University of Illinois basketball star who played seven seasons in the NBA, has died at age 58.

The university said in a news release that Weatherspoon died in his hometown of Canton, Ohio, on Friday. The cause of death wasn't immediately known.

Pressel tied for lead in LPGA Tour event

Morgan Pressel moved into position for her first LPGA Tour victory of the year, shooting 5-under-par 67 for a share of the third-round lead at the Kapalua LPGA Classic in Kapalua, Hawaii.

Pressel was tied with Brittany Lang (71), Carin Koch (68) and Jee Young Lee (70) at 5-under 211.

Also: Bernhard Langer shot 5-under 67 and was tied for the lead after the second round of the Champions Tour Administaff Small Business Classic in The Woodlands, Texas.

Langer, Lonnie Nielsen and Brad Bryant were at 9-under 135 for the tournament.

Sweden's Robert Karlsson moved into contention for his third straight European PGA Tour title, playing 16 holes in 6 under for a share of the lead in the weather-suspended third round of the Portugal Masters in Vilamoura, Portugal.

Karlsson, England's Ross Fisher and Spain's Alvaro Quiros were 14 under for the tournament when play was suspended.

The uncle of PGA Tour star Camilo Villegas was shot and killed after thieves tried to rob his business in Colombia.

Ernesto Villegas Zuluaga, 56, was killed when two armed men entered his coffee trading enterprise demanding money and he jumped on one of them, according to senior Caldas state official Henry Murillo.

Yanks' Chamberlain arrested on DUI charge

New York Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence, speeding and having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle.

Deborah Collins, a spokeswoman for the Nebraska State Patrol, said Chamberlain was stopped for speeding on U.S. 77 near his hometown of Lincoln at about 1 a.m. CDT Saturday.

Collins said Chamberlain was taken to the Cornhusker Place Detox in Lincoln.

UNLV

Volleyball team rolls to win over Wyoming

The UNLV volleyball team swept Wyoming 25-23, 25-19, 25-23 at Cox Pavilion in a Mountain West Conference match.

Erin Greenwood had a match-high 19 kills for the Rebels (13-8, 6-2 MWC), and Cursty Jackson and Sara Nehf added 14 and 12 kills.

Melody Nua had 48 assists and 10 digs.

Also: The UNLV women's golf team slipped from 10th to 13th at the 16-team Stanford Intercollegiate in Palo Alto, Calif.

Natasha Krishna shot 1-under 70, but she was the only Rebel under par in the second round as UNLV shot 14-over 298 for a 17-over 585 total. UCLA led the field at 5-under 563.

Krishna, in 48th individually after the first round, jumped to 17th at 1-over 143, eight shots behind leader Caroline Masson of Oklahoma State.

UNLV's Luca Barlocchi lost in the semifinals of the ITA Region 7 Men's Tennis Championships at Darling Memorial Tennis Center.

Barlocchi fell 6-3, 6-1 to Denver's Martin Zimmerman.

In consolation play, UNLV's Wesley Burrows lost to Boise State's Cristian Hodel, 6-3, 6-4.

The UNLV cross country team took 10th at the 17-team Santa Clara Invitational in Santa Clara, Calif.

Jenni Shearer led the Rebels, finishing fourth in 17 minutes, 34 seconds in the 5-kilometer race, 20 seconds.

Sarah Apgar won in 17:14, leading Long Beach State to the team title.

HOCKEY

Wranglers drop second straight to Aces, 6-5

The Wranglers suffered their second straight loss to start the ECHL season, dropping a 6-5 decision to the Alaska Aces in Anchorage.

Aces goalie J.P. Lamoureux made 42 saves in regulation and stopped all four Wranglers' shot attempts in the shootout for the win.

Alaska defensemen Corbin Schmidt and Matt Shasby tallied late third-period goals to cap the Aces' comeback.
