Johnson, Flanagan share lead at PGA tourney

First-round leader Richard S. Johnson shot a 3-under-par 67 and Nick Flanagan had a 7-under 63 Friday to share the second-round lead at 10 under at the U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee.

Kent Jones and Gavin Coles were tied for third a shot back of the leaders. Jones shot 65 and Coles had the low round of the tournament at 62, one shy of the course record.

Another stroke back at 132 were Troy Matteson and Ken Duke, who both shot 65.

Also: Christina Kim's second-round 68 at the LPGA State Farm Classic in Springfield, Ill., looked ordinary compared with her opening 63, but it included a birdie putt on her last hole that gave her a one-stroke lead over Michelle Wie and three others.

The 18-year-old Wie shot a 65 that pulled her to 12 under for the tournament.

Dana Quigley shot a tournament-record 10-under 62 and leads after the first round of the Champions Tour's 3M Championship in Blaine, Minn.

Gene Jones shot a season-best 64 and is two shots back.

BASKETBALL

Jazz sign star guard Williams to extension

Point guard Deron Williams signed a contract extension with Utah that will keep him with the Jazz through at least the 2011-12 season.

Williams, who was picked third overall in the 2005 NBA Draft, signed a three-year deal with a one-year option. Terms of the contract were not released.

Williams has led Utah to the last two Northwest Division titles. He has career averages of 15.3 points, 8.1 assists and 2.9 rebounds per game.

Also: The Los Angeles Lakers will not match Golden State's offer for Ronny Turiaf, meaning the forward will play for the Warriors.

The Warriors signed Turiaf, a restricted free agent, to a four-year, $17 million offer sheet last week. The Lakers had seven days to decide whether to match it.

Oklahoma City signed restricted free-agent guard C.J. Miles to an offer sheet.

Under terms of the NBA's collective bargaining agreement, Miles' current team, the Utah Jazz, has seven days to match the offer.

Forward Marreese Speights, taken by the Philadelphia 76ers with the 16th overall pick in June's NBA Draft, signed with the team.

Speights declared for the draft after his sophomore year at Florida.

Los Angeles Lakers forward Luke Walton underwent surgery to remove bone spurs and scar tissue and clean up some cartilage debris from his right ankle. He is expected to make a full recovery by the start of training camp.

Coach Ernie Kent and Oregon have agreed to terms on a new contract that will run through the 2012-13 season.

Packers president gives support to GM, coach

Green Bay Packers president Mark Murphy restated his support for general manager Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy in the standoff with Brett Favre.

Team spokesman Aaron Popkey said Murphy has "full confidence" in how Thompson and McCarthy are handling this matter.

Favre is having second thoughts about football after retiring in March. But the Packers have since committed to moving on without the three-time Most Valuable Player.

Also: Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Jerry Porter had surgery to repair a torn hamstring tendon and will miss the entire preseason.

The New York Jets signed former Purdue tight end Dustin Keller, the 30th overall pick in the NFL Draft, to a multiyear contract.

Goaltender Miller signs extension with Sabres

The Buffalo Sabres locked up goaltender Ryan Miller with a five-year, $31.25 million extension. He will make $6.25 million each year through the 2013-14 season.

Miller played in a franchise-high 76 games last season. He posted a 36-27-10 record with a 2.64 goals-against average and notched a career-high three shutouts.

Also: The Pittsburgh Penguins' march to the Stanley Cup Finals has paid off for coach Michel Therrien, who agreed to a new three-year contract.

The deal includes a raise for this season and goes through the 2010-11 season.

MISCELLANEOUS

British rider wins fourth Tour de France stage

Britain's Mark Cavendish won a stage for the fourth time and Australia's Cadel Evans kept the yellow jersey after the 13th stage as the Tour de France tried to recover from another drug scandal.

This was the second straight stage victory for Cavendish. Leading a group sprint, the Team Columbia rider beat Australia's Robbie McEwen by nearly two bike lengths in the 113-mile stage from Narbonne to Nimes.

Evans retained the overall lead by finishing alongside his chief rivals in the main pack. He leads Frank Schleck of Luxembourg by one second and Christian Vandevelde of the United States by 38.

French authorities filed preliminary charges against Italy's Riccardo Ricco, who tested positive for the blood booster EPO. He could face two years in prison if convicted on charges of using toxic substances.

Ricco, who won two stages of this Tour, was fired from his Saunier Duval team one day after he was kicked out of the race. He is the third rider to be ousted.

Also: Gymnast Shayla Worley broke her right fibula just below the knee during warm-ups for the Olympic selection camp in New Waverly, Texas, essentially ending her chances of making the U.S. women's team for the Beijing Games.

Double-amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius was left off South Africa's 1,600-meter relay team, ending his hopes of participating in the Beijing Olympics.

He couldn't hit the 400-meter qualifying time of 45.55 seconds, despite running a personal-best 46.25 Wednesday on his prosthetic blades at a meet in Lucerne, Switzerland.

British sprinter Dwain Chambers failed in his bid to overturn a lifetime Olympic ban because of doping and will not be able to compete at the Beijing Games.

London's High Court refused to grant an injunction against the British Olympic Association's bylaw that bans doping violators for life from the Olympics. Chambers' legal team said it would not appeal the decision.

A federal judge in San Francisco declined to toss out track coach Trevor Graham's conviction for lying to federal investigators in a performance-enhancing drug probe.

A jury convicted Graham in May of making false statements during the investigation into whether sprinter Marion Jones and other athletes lied to authorities about their performance-enhancing drug use.

Graham is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 15 and faces up to a year in prison.

A doctor who performed brain surgery on a boxer who collapsed during a fight in San Antonio this week says he expects the young man to survive.

Welterweight Oscar Diaz, 25, remains in critical but stable condition, according to Dr. David Jimenez. Diaz is still in a coma, but Jimenez says that is to be expected because of the severe brain injury.

Diaz collapsed before the 11th round of the USBA welterweight championship fight against Delvin Rodriguez on Wednesday night.

Junior welterweight contender Edgar "El Chamaco" Santana was among 12 people arrested in New York on charges of taking part in an international cocaine trafficking ring.

Prosecutors said Santana, 29, conspired with the other suspects to smuggle cocaine from Puerto Rico into New York. Narcotics detectives seized several pounds of cocaine and $450,000 in cash as part of the investigation.
