Storm beats Sparks to tie WNBA series

Sue Bird scored 20 points, Sheryl Swoopes added 16, and the host Seattle Storm beat the Los Angeles Sparks 64-50 Sunday to force a decisive Game 3 in a WNBA Western Conference semifinal series.

The final game in the best-of-3 series will be played Tuesday in Seattle. The Storm will try to avoid losing in the opening round of the playoffs for the fourth straight year.

Also: Tamika Catchings had 27 points and 10 rebounds, and the Indiana Fever beat the host Detroit Shock 89-82 in overtime to force a decisive third game in the Eastern Conference playoff series.

Game 3 is Tuesday night in Auburn Hills, Mich.

UNLV

Men's soccer team rallies past St. Mary's

Lamar Neagle scored twice in 29 seconds, lifting the UNLV men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over St. Mary's in the BMW/Nike Classic in San Francisco.

After the Gaels went up 1-0 in the 78th minute, Neagle tied the score in the 84th minute for UNLV (5-2-1) off a Ben Haugland pass. Moments later, Neagle headed in a long throw-in from Austin Horner to make the score 2-1.

Also: The UNLV women's soccer team routed Niagara 4-0 to close out the UNLV Rebels Classic at Johann Memorial Field.

Amanda Forrester, Brianna Moore, Niki Connolly and Ashleigh Shoughro scored for UNLV (7-2-1). Goalkeeper Alicia Lugo needed to make just one save in the shutout.

MacKenzie wins playoff for second PGA title

A day after blowing a lead with a triple bogey on the final hole, Will MacKenzie birdied the par-5 18th three straight times to win the Viking Classic in a playoff for his second PGA Tour victory.

MacKenzie beat Marc Turnesa on the second playoff hole in Madison, Miss., after Brian Gay dropped out on the first extra hole.

MacKenzie birdied three of the last four holes of regulation for a 4-under 68 to match Turnesa (70) and Gay (68) at 19-under 269.

Also: Dinara Safina will move up to No. 3 in the world rankings after dominating Russian compatriot Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-1, 6-3 to win the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.

The victory gave the fourth-seeded Safina her fourth WTA singles title this season, tying her with No. 1 Serena Williams for the most this year.

Alberto Contador of Spain won the Spanish Vuelta, completing a sweep of cycling's three major races after capturing this year's Giro d'Italia and the 2007 Tour de France.

The 25-year-old Astana rider finished the Vuelta in 80 hours, 40 minutes, 23 seconds, beating teammate Levi Leipheimer of the United States by 1:01 as the race finished in Madrid.

Former Colorado Avalanche coach Joel Quenneville is due in court next month on a drunken driving charge.

Police in the Denver suburb of Lone Tree said Quenneville was stopped Friday night for driving without his headlights on. After further investigation, he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and failure to use headlights.
