Castroneves captures Sonoma, ends streak

Helio Castroneves won for the first time in 30 IndyCar races Sunday, claiming the Grand Prix of Sonoma at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.

The victory snapped a winless string dating to April 2007 and put Castroneves squarely back into a championship duel with IRL series leader Scott Dixon that looked like a lost cause before Sunday.

Dixon suffered through one of his worst days of the season, finishing 12th, and saw his lead shrink from a seemingly comfortable 78 points to 43 heading into next week's race at Detroit's Belle Isle, the penultimate race of the season.

Castroneves and teammate Ryan Briscoe started 1-2 and finished the same way.

Also: Ferrari's Felipe Massa won the European Grand Prix for his fourth Formula One victory of the season, leading wire-to-wire to finish comfortably ahead of championship leader Lewis Hamilton in second.

Massa easily held onto his lead after starting from the pole position and finished 5.6 seconds ahead of Hamilton's McLaren on the 3.4-mile street circuit.

James Stewart is one event away from a perfect season in AMA Toyota Motocross.

The season championship already in hand, Stewart raced to his 11th win in 11 events at the Kicker Audio Southwick Motocross National in Southwick, Mass.

Go Between sprints to Pacific Classic win

Go Between prevailed in a long stretch battle with Well Armed to win the $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar racetrack.

Go Between was ridden by Garrett Gomez and won by a neck. The 5-year-old horse ran 11/4 miles in 2:01.18. Mast Track was third, 21/2 lengths behind Well Armed.

The victory gave Go Between an automatic spot in the Breeders' Cup Classic in a new Win and You're In program that's made certain stakes races BC qualifiers.

Also: Miami starting quarterback Robert Marve and six others have been suspended for Thursday's season opener against Charleston Southern.

Marve, a redshirt freshman announced as the starter after Sunday night's practice, will miss the game due to an incident last year. He was arrested Oct. 31 for smashing a car mirror. He was charged with two misdemeanors, but they were later lifted.

The other suspended players are running backs Damien Berry and Eric Houston, defensive end Adewale Ojomo, defensive back Randy Phillips, wide receiver Kayne Farquaharson and long snapper Chris Ivory. No reasons for the suspensions were given.

Ashleigh Shoughro and Haley Partridge scored second-half goals and goaltender Alicia Lugo had four saves as the UNLV women's soccer team (1-0-1) shut out UC Irvine (0-1-0) 2-0 in Irvine, Calif.
