Piercy finishes second in Nationwide tourney

Former Bonanza High School standout Scott Piercy matched the course record with a final-round 61, but that wasn't enough to catch Chris Tidland in the Nationwide Tour's Boise Open in Boise, Idaho.

Tidland closed with a 7-under 64 for a 20-under 264 total, with Piercy four shots back in second at the Hillcrest Country Club course.

Tidland, who got his first Nationwide win, earned $130,500 to jump from 86th to 16th on the money list.

Piercy, who has won two Nationwide tournaments this year, has firmly positioned himself for a spot on the PGA Tour next year, earning $78,300 to move from 12th to third.

The top 25 at the end of the season will earn PGA Tour cards.

Also: Angela Stanford won the Bell Micro LPGA Classic for her second career LPGA Tour title, holing a 31/2-foot par putt on the final hole for a 1-over 73 and a one-stroke victory over China's Shanshan Feng.

The 30-year-old Texan, four strokes ahead entering the final round after consecutive 67s in the second and third rounds, had an 11-under 277 total.

The 19-year-old Feng shot 68 to finish at 278.

Kim Hall was third at 8-under 280 after a 69, and Hee Young Park (70), Danielle Downey (70) and Katherine Hull (73) followed at 281.

R.W. Eaks successfully defended his Greater Hickory Classic title, closing with a 1-under 71 in Conover, N.C., for a four-stroke victory over Tom Jenkins and Tom Kite.

The 56-year-old Eaks had a 16-under 200 total in his second Champions Tour victory of the year.

Sweden's Robert Karlsson won the Mercedes-Benz Championship, shooting 1-under 71 for a two-stroke victory in Pulheim, Germany.

The European Ryder Cup player had a 13-under 275 total. Italy's Francesco Molinari closed with a 70 to finish second.

Women's soccer upsets Wisconsin-Milwaukee

The UNLV women's soccer team upset No. 24 Wisconsin-Milwaukee 2-1 in overtime at the New Mexico Nike Classic in Albuquerque, N.M.

Defender Brie Kuhne headed in a corner kick four minutes into the extra session for the Rebels (6-1-1).

Brianna Moore put UNLV up 1-0 in the 24th minute with her third goal of the year, and the Panthers (6-1-1) tied it early in the second half.

Alicia Lugo had three saves for UNLV.

The UNLV men's soccer team finished off its Nike Invitational with a 2-1, double-overtime win against Oral Roberts at Johann Memorial Field.

Daniel Cruz got the game winner, off a cross from Ben Haugland in the 107th minute.

The Rebels (4-2) trailed 1-0 before Lamar Neagle scored with less than five minutes left in regulation.

River Cats win PCL title, aim for Triple-A crown

The Sacramento River Cats clinched the Pacific Coast League Championship for the fourth time in six years, beating the Oklahoma Redhawks 4-2 in Oklahoma City to win the best-of-5 series, 3-1.

On Tuesday, Sacramento will face International League champion Scranton-Wilkes Barre (Pa.) in the Bricktown Showdown, a one-game playoff for the Triple-A championship. The River Cats won the championship last year.

Carlos Gonzales had a hand in all four River Cats runs, hitting a three-run homer and an RBI single.

Also: American Sanya Richards beat Olympic 400-meter champion Christine Ohuruogu at the World Athletics Final in Stuttgart, Germany, handing the Briton her only defeat of the year.

Richards had been considered a favorite in the 400 at the Beijing Olympics last month, and the American set the early pace in that race, only to fade to third.

This time, Richards won with plenty to spare in 50.41 seconds, with Ohuruogu second in 50.83.

Alberto Contador of Spain extended his lead in the Spanish Vuelta, edging American Levi Leipheimer by two seconds to win the 14th stage in Fuentes de Invierno, Spain.

The Spanish cyclist finished the 98-mile leg in 4 hours, 16 minutes, 1 second after a grueling climb up the 4,921-foot San Isidro peak.

Contador leads Leipheimer, his Astana teammate, by 1:17 in the overall standings.

Christian Vande Velde won the Tour of Missouri, finishing with the main pack in the rain-shortened final stage in St. Louis.

Vande Velde edged Australia's Michael Rogers by 18 seconds.

Italy's Francesco Chicchi won the 53-mile seventh stage in 1:57:06.

Esther Vergeer won her 349th straight match, capturing the Paralympic gold medal in women's wheelchair tennis with a victory over Dutch teammate Korie Howman in Beijing.

She won 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (5) to extend a streak that has lasted 51/2 years.
