Three-goal flurry helps Turkey surprise Czechs

Turkey stunned the Czech Republic with three goals in the final 15 minutes, including two in three minutes, for a 3-2 victory in Geneva, Switzerland, that lifted the Turks into the European Championship quarterfinals.

The Czechs were in control 2-0 on goals by Jan Koller and Jaroslav Plasil before Turkey staged its comeback in the rain. Arda Turan scored in the 75th minute, then Nihat Kahveci tied it off a mistake by goalkeeper Petr Cech in the 87th minute and won it in the 89th with a sharp shot off the crossbar and into the net.

Also: Hakan Yakin scored twice to give Switzerland a 2-0 victory over Portugal in Basel, Switzerland, helping the co-host end its European Championship with a first-ever win at the tournament.

The U.S. women's team beat Australia 2-1 in its opening match of the Peace Queen Cup in Suwon, South Korea, on goals by Natasha Kai in the first half and Abby Wambach 13 minutes from the end.

Australia's Heather Garriock tied it in the 57th minute.

BASEBALL

Underdog Fresno State roughs up Rice in CWS

Danny Muno, Alan Ahmady and Jordan Ribera launched three-run homers as Fresno State's amazing postseason run continued with a stunning 17-5 victory over Rice at the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.

The Bulldogs -- the ultimate underdogs as the first No. 4 regional seed to reach Omaha -- broke open the game with a seven-run fourth inning.

Fresno State will play Tuesday against North Carolina, an 8-4 winner over Louisiana State. Rice will play LSU on Thursday.

North Carolina's Alex White gave up home runs to LSU's Michael Hollander and Matt Clark leading off the first and second, then allowed only two singles the rest of the way in working seven-plus innings.

CYCLING

Spanish rider captures Tour de France tuneup

Alejandro Valverde won the Dauphine Libere, putting the Spanish cyclist among the favorites for next month's Tour de France.

Kazakh rider Dmitriy Fofonov won the seventh and final stage, completing the 79.5 miles from Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne to Grenoble, France, in 3 hours, 17 minutes, 20 seconds.

Valverde finished with a total time of 27 hours, 39 minutes, edging Cadel Evans of Australia by 39 seconds. Levi Leipheimer of the United States was third, 1:24 back.

Also: Spain's Igor Anton took the overall lead in the Tour de Suisse by surging to victory in Flumserberg, Switzerland, in the final stretch of the 122-mile second stage.

Anton finished in 5 hours, 1 minute, 25 seconds, edging Kim Kirchen of Luxembourg by six seconds.

Kirchen was second overall and Italy's Damiano Cunego third.

Deal keeps New York's OTB parlors in business

New York City's financially troubled Off-Track Betting horse racing operations are being taken over by the state, the mayor and governor said.

Under an agreement between the city and the state, a newly formed state corporation takes over OTB while the city continues to receive part of a surcharge related to wagers placed on races at tracks within city limits, which last year amounted to $4.25 million.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg had said before announcement of the deal that the city was ready to shutter its 60 OTB parlors Sunday. About 1,500 jobs had been on the brink of elimination.

Gov. David Paterson said he would welcome those OTB employees back to work today.

Also: One of the most anticipated trials in Seattle history is set to begin today.

The six-day, no-jury trial in federal court will settle the final two years of the SuperSonics' lease at KeyArena. Sonics owner Clay Bennett has gained the NBA's approval to move the team to his hometown of Oklahoma City, but Seattle argues its lease forces the franchise to play two more seasons before leaving.

The Florida Highway Patrol says former Marshall football standout Johnathan Goddard died in a motorcycle accident Saturday in Clay County, Fla.

Goddard was the Mid-American Conference defensive player of the year in 2004, when he led the nation with 16 sacks.

Kenny Parks, a 51-year-old coming off his first professional bowling title Friday at the USBC Senior Masters in Tucson, Ariz., will try to stay on a roll today when the PBA Senior U.S. Open begins at the Suncoast.

There will be three days of qualifying leading up to match play, with the stepladder finals set for 3:30 p.m. Friday.

David Dixon shot a 5-under-par 66 to win the Saint-Omer Open in Saint-Omer, France, and earn his first victory on the PGA European Tour.

The 31-year-old Englishman finished at 5-under 279 to beat Christian Nilsson of Sweden by one stroke.

Kawasaki's James Stewart remained perfect in four MA Toyota Motocross Championship races this season, sweeping the motos at High Point Raceway in Mount Morris, Pa.
