Love among survivors in U.S. Open qualifying
After playing four difficult days at the Memorial, Davis Love III made it through 36 holes Monday to qualify for his 18th consecutive trip to the U.S. Open.
Fred Couples and several other PGA Tour players weren't nearly so fortunate.
Love's streak of 70 consecutive majors ended when he failed to qualify for the Masters, but he followed a 72 at Brookside with a 5-under 66 at the tougher Ohio State Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio, to become one of 23 players at the sectional qualifier to earn a trip to Torrey Pines.
Carl Pettersson won the Columbus qualifier with a 131 total.
With an 11-man playoff for the final seven spots, former UNLV star Chad Campbell and Rocco Mediate were among those who made it through before darkness. Oklahoma State freshman Rickie Fowler was among three players who had to return today for two spots.
The qualifier was one of 13 held Monday in the United States, with another one in Europe.
Also: Tiger Woods has started playing some holes, taking another step in his comeback from knee surgery.
With the U.S. Open just a week away, Woods said he is not worried about how he and his left leg will fare.
The world's No. 1 golfer had surgery on his left knee April 15 and plans to end his layoff June 12-15 at Torrey Pines in San Diego.
