Stanford receiver Owusu ruled
out for game against Oregon

Chris Owusu will miss No. 3 Stanford's showdown against sixth-ranked Oregon while the wide receiver recovers from his latest concussion.

Stanford coach David Shaw said Tuesday that Owusu will not play against the Ducks on Saturday. He said the receiver's status for the rest of the season is still being evaluated.

Owusu has had at least three concussions in the last 13 months.

He was taken from Oregon State's Reser Stadium by ambulance Saturday after a helmet-to-helmet hit by the Beavers' Jordan Poyer.

Owusu has 35 catches for 376 yards and two touchdowns this season.

Also: The Notre Dame offensive line, which hasn't surrendered a sack in more than six weeks, lost starting center Braxston Cave for the remainder of the season.

Coach Brian Kelly said Cave will have surgery this week to repair a foot ligament. Cave suffered the injury in Saturday's win at Wake Forest.

Terrance Owens threw for 318 yards and three touchdowns, and Toledo beat Western Michigan 66-63, a week after the Rockets lost a shootout 63-60 to Northern Illinois.

Western Michigan's Alex Carder threw seven touchdown passes and ran for another score, but it wasn't enough against the Rockets, who rushed for 419 yards.

Weber State coach Ron McBride will retire at the end of this season after nearly five decades on the sidelines for more than a half-dozen college football programs. McBride, 72, coached Utah from 1990 to 2002.

New Jersey residents approve
legalization of sports betting

New Jersey residents voted in favor of the legalization of sports betting if a federal ban can be overturned

With nearly 90 percent of precincts reporting, the sole statewide question on the ballot was favored by 65 percent of voters. The nonbinding question asked whether New Jersey should pass a law that would be the first step toward permitting sports betting at Atlantic City casinos, the state's four horse tracks and a former race track site in Cherry Hill.

A federal ban on sports betting in all but four states would have to be repealed before anyone in New Jersey could legally bet on professional, college or amateur sports. Bets would not be allowed on any college sports or athletic events that take place in New Jersey, or on games in which a New Jersey college team is playing.

Also: The UNLV men's golf team totaled 25-over-par 313 to stand in fifth place after the first round of the 20-team PGA Jones Cup in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Arizona led at 20-over 308, followed by Methodist University, of Fayetteville, N.C., in second at 309.

UNLV was paced by Cameron Alford, who shot 3-over 75. N.C. State's Ben Nelson shot 73 to take the individual lead.

Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., led 53 players who advanced in the PBA World Series of Bowling at South Point Bowling Center. Rash totaled 7,674 pins in 32 games for a 314-pin lead over Australia's Jason Belmonte.

The final qualifying round is this morning, with the top 16 reaching the elimination rounds.

North Dakota's state Senate endorsed legislation allowing the University of North Dakota to discard its Fighting Sioux athletics nickname while ordering a three-year wait before the school decides on a replacement.

The school has been under sanctions from the NCAA since August for keeping the nickname and a logo depicting the profile of an American Indian warrior.
