In Brief

Seattle Mariners outfielder Greg Halman was stabbed to death early Monday in The Hague, Netherlands, and his brother was arrested as a suspect, Dutch police said.

Rotterdam police were called to a home in the port city in the early hours of the morning and found the 24-year-old Dutch player bleeding from a stab wound, a spokeswoman said. The officers and ambulance paramedics were unable to resuscitate Halman.

Officers arrested Halman's 22-year-old brother. His name wasn't released because of Dutch privacy rules. No charges have been filed.

Halman hit .230 in 35 games and made starts at all three outfield positions for the Mariners in 2011 before being optioned to Triple-A Tacoma.

Also: Joe Nathan and the Texas Rangers agreed to a two-year contract with a club option for 2014, a move that means closer Neftali Feliz will shift to the starting rotation.

Nathan, who turned 37 today, missed the 2010 season after Tommy John surgery on his pitching elbow and struggled to find his form with Minnesota last season. The four-time All-Star went 2-1 with a 4.84 ERA and 14 saves in 48 appearances, losing his job as closer early in the season before reclaiming it.

The Pittsburgh Pirates agreed to terms with shortstop Clint Barmes on a two-year contract worth $10.5 million. The 33-year-old is a .252 career hitter, with 73 homers and 324 RBIs.

Ferrer shocks Murray
in ATP World Tour Finals

Fifth-seeded David Ferrer pulled off the first upset of the ATP World Tour Finals with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over third-seeded Andy Murray, whose groin injury might force him to quit the season-ending, pool-play tournament in London.

Murray said he injured himself during training a few days after the Paris Masters this month. He said he'll decide today if he'll keep playing.

In another match, Novak Djokovic saved a match point in the third set against Tomas Berdych before winning, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3).

Djokovic, who has been nursing a shoulder problem, withstood some spectacular hitting by the seventh-seeded Berdych, who had a point to win the match at 6-5 in the decider but put a forehand into the net.
