Red Wings goalie Hasek announces retirement

The passion that made Dominik Hasek great is gone.

So, the goaltender known as the Dominator said goodbye to the Detroit Red Wings and the NHL.

"Physically, I'm feeling great -- as well as ever," Hasek said Monday as he announced his retirement. "I just don't feel that I'm ready to compete on the highest level.

"I need motivation. Right now, I don't feel it's there, and I don't want to disappoint anyone."

Hasek, 43, rarely did disappoint during his 16 seasons, becoming the first goalie to be a two-time Most Valuable Player. He won six Vezina Trophies, trailing only Jacques Plante's seven.

Hasek's announcement came five days after the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup over Pittsburgh.

Detroit general manager Ken Holland said Hasek's place in history is secured, calling him not only one of the greatest goalies of his era -- along with Patrick Roy and Martin Brodeur -- but also one of the best in NHL history.

"He's a first-ballot Hall of Famer," Holland said.

Fresno State stuns ASU to claim CWS berth

Steve Susdorf's two-run homer capped Fresno State's six-run seventh inning as the Bulldogs stunned Arizona State 12-9 in Tempe, Ariz., to advance to the College World Series for the first time since 1991.

Fresno State (42-29) became the first No. 4 seed to reach Omaha, Neb., since the NCAA expanded the tournament field to 64 teams in 1999.

The Sun Devils (49-13), the No. 3 national seed, had been unbeaten in four postseason games before consecutive losses to the Bulldogs. Arizona State won the first game in the best-of-3 super regional.

In other super-regional action, Louisiana State routed UC Irvine 21-7 in Game 3 in Baton Rouge, La., to join the eight-team CWS field.

Also: Cimarron-Memorial High School graduate Mark Willinsky, a redshirt sophomore at Santa Clara, signed a contract with the Milwaukee Brewers. Willinsky, a right-handed pitcher, was selected in the 15th round of last week's major league draft. He went 4-2 with six saves last season for Santa Clara.

The Pac-10's Tom Hansen, the longest-tenured Division I conference commissioner in the country, will retire next summer after 26 years on the job. He is 70.

University of Oregon wrestlers have gone to court to try to prevent the school from dropping the sport to make room for a baseball team.

UNR softball coach Michelle Gardner, the 2008 Western Athletic Conference coach of the year, is leaving the Wolf Pack to become the coach at Indiana.

Netherlands routs Italy in European soccer

The Dutch made the first surprise of the European Soccer Championship a stunner.

The Netherlands handed Italy its worst loss in tournament history, a 3-0 rout that left the World Cup champions in danger of elimination in the first round.

Ruud van Nistelrooy and Wesley Sneijder scored in the first half, and standout defender Giovanni van Bronckhorst added the third goal in the 79th minute.

Also: Atlanta is losing its regular PGA Tour event next year after four decades because it could not find a title sponsor, which could pave the way for the Valero Texas Open to move its tournament to the spring.

The TPC Sugarloaf has hosted the tournament since 1997. AT&T decided last year it would not renew its title sponsorship for the event.

Banned sprinter Justin Gatlin has filed a lawsuit in a last-ditch effort to compete at the U.S. Olympic Trials in less than three weeks.

On Friday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld a four-year doping ban against the reigning Olympic 100-meter gold medalist.
