Former Rebel Moore tied for Nelson lead

Former UNLV All-American Ryan Moore weathered blustery conditions Thursday to card an up-and-down 3-under-par 67 and share the first-round lead of the EDS Byron Nelson Championship in Irving, Texas.

Moore, who had seven birdies and four bogeys in only his third tournament in 10 weeks, was tied with Mathew Goggin and Eric Axley.

"It was just one of those days that you knew it was going to be a battle the whole time you were out there," said Moore, who had taken extra time off the last two months to cure a sore shoulder. "I'll take a 67 on any course any day."

Eight golfers came in at 68, including Adam Scott, another former UNLV standout.

Also: Paula Creamer shot a 3-under 68, giving her a share of the lead with Momeko Ueda and Young Kim after the first round of the inaugural Stanford International Pro-Am in Aventura, Fla.

On a day that turned into a test of endurance more than anything else, only 21 of 111 pros broke par.

"Silly tough," said veteran Annika Sorenstam, who shot 69 and trails by one stroke.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Tennessee's Smith will return for junior year

Tyler Smith will return to Tennessee for his junior season, hoping to improve his NBA Draft prospects for 2009.

The 6-foot-7-inch forward averaged 13.5 points a game and led the 31-win Volunteers in rebounds and assists last season.

Also: Alabama State player Deshean Porchea collapsed and died after playing in a pickup game on campus in Montgomery, Ala.

The 19-year-old sophomore passed out Wednesday after walking off the court and never regained consciousness. An autopsy was performed Thursday, but results were not immediately available.

Alabama-Birmingham men's basketball coach Mike Davis received a two-year contract extension and a $25,000 raise.

The new deal runs through the 2012-2013 season.

Davis got a raise in his base salary to $625,000.

MISCELLANEOUS

Finalists announced for Lady Byng Trophy

Detroit center Pavel Datsyuk, Buffalo right wing Jason Pominville and Tampa Bay right wing Martin St. Louis are finalists for the Lady Byng Trophy given to the NHL player who best combines sportsmanship with playing ability.

Datsyuk won the Lady Byng in 2006 and 2007 and could become the first player to win it three times in a row since the New York Rangers' Frank Boucher captured the award from 1933 to 1935.

Also: Roger Federer beat Gael Monfils of France 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Monte Carlo Masters in Monaco.

The 12-time Grand Slam champion overcame an early break against Monfils and looked to have recovered a day after he had to come back from 5-1 down in the third set to beat 137th-ranked Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo.

Also, three-time defending champion Rafael Nadal beat Juan Carlos Ferrero, 6-4, 6-1.

Slipstream-Chipotle, the Colorado-based team that features two veteran Tour de France riders, won the rare team time trial fourth stage by nearly three seconds, while Greg Henderson increased his lead in the Tour de Georgia in Braselton, Ga.

Paced by David Zabriskie of Salt Lake City, a former individual time trial stage winner and race leader of the Tour de France, Slipstream-Chipotle completed the 10-mile, four-loop course at Road Atlanta in 19 minutes, 38.86 seconds.

Henderson began the fourth stage with a nine-second lead over Tyler Farrar of Wenatchee, Wash. But Farrar dropped off his winning team's pace on the final lap and fell to 69th place, to trail Henderson by 1:58.
