Hatton posts lopsided victory in return to ring

Ricky Hatton prevailed in a lopsided decision over Juan Lazcano on Saturday to retain his IBO light welterweight title and restart his career before a raucous home crowd in Manchester, England.

Hatton won easily on all three judges scorecards at the Manchester City soccer ground: 120-110, 118-110 and 120-108.

It was Hatton's first fight since he lost a WBC welterweight bid against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in December. That was his first loss in 44 career fights.

"It was a difficult fight," Hatton said. "I've never been more nervous in a boxing match in my life. All those demons were in my mind about not coming back so strong."

After the fight, it was announced that a deal had been sealed for Hatton to face Paulie Malignaggi, who won on the undercard, in November, with New York a likely location.

Malignaggi, of New York, narrowly defended his IBF light-welterweight title with a split-decision victory over Lovemore N'Dou, but his movement was limited after the sixth round when a knuckle in his right hand was likely broken.

UNR golf coach probe targets sports betting

An NCAA investigation of a former UNR men's golf coach centers on the possibility of sports betting, the Reno Gazette-Journal reported.

Documents obtained by the newspaper through a Freedom of Information Act request show NCAA investigators searched Rich Merritt's e-mail files for gambling-related keywords, such as "line," "spread" and "underdog."

The documents show the NCAA obtained the Merritt family's personal financial records despite the former coach's objections.

Also: Clint Arnold went 6-for-6 and drove in five runs as 21st-ranked Texas Christian beat New Mexico 15-2 in Fort Worth, Texas, to capture the Mountain West Conference championship and earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

Johns Hopkins ended Duke's lacrosse season for the third time in four years and spoiled the last chance for the players stained by a stripper scandal to leave with an NCAA championship.

Kevin Huntley scored four goals in Johns Hopkins' 10-9 victory over top-seeded Duke in Foxborough, Mass., and put the Blue Jays in Monday's championship game against Syracuse. The Orange beat Virginia 12-11 in double overtime in the other semifinal.

It was the final game for the five Duke players granted an extra year of eligibility to make up for their aborted 2006 season, when since-disbarred District Attorney Mike Nifong charged three players with raping a stripper hired to dance at a party.

Demario Butler scored 25 points and Mike Tabb added 23 points an eight rebounds as the Las Vegas Stars beat the Vancouver Volcanoes 124-114 in an International Basketball League game in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Alex Ferguson says he will quit as coach of Manchester United within three years.

The revelation came days after winning the European Champions League -- the 22nd trophy of Ferguson's 22-year Old Trafford reign.

"I won't be managing here any more than three years at the very, very most," the 66-year-old Ferguson told the Mail in Sunday's newspaper.
