Pacquiao-Barrera set for rematch of '03 fight

Manny Pacquiao will face Marco Antonio Barrera in a rematch on Oct. 6 at Mandalay Bay, it was announced Friday in Los Angeles.

Pacquiao stopped Barrera in the 11th round of their Nov. 15, 2003, fight in San Antonio.

Pacquiao, from the Philippines, will bring a 44-3-2 record with 34 knockouts into the super featherweight bout.

Barrera, a native of Mexico City, is 63-5 with 42 KOs.

BASKETBALL

Four men arrested in NBA player robberies

Chicago authorities charged four men in connection with the armed robberies of two NBA players in their Chicago-area homes last month.

Police said they found nothing to indicate other athletes had been targeted.

"Hopefully, if they had any plans of doing this again, we've put a damper on those plans," Chicago police commander Thomas Byrne said.

New York Knicks forward Eddy Curry was tied up and robbed in his suburban Chicago mansion a few weeks after Miami Heat forward Antoine Walker had been similarly robbed at his $4 million Chicago townhouse.

The four men suspected in the robbery at Walker's home are charged with home invasion, armed robbery and aggravated kidnapping, Cook County state's attorney spokeswoman Tandra Simonton said.

She identified the suspects as Phillip Allison, 28, Antoine Larkins, 28, Demorris Hill, 25, and Gregory Reedfields, 23, all of Chicago.

Burr Ridge Police Chief Herbert Timm said Hill and Larkins also are being charged with armed robbery, aggravated kidnapping and home invasion in the Curry case. A third suspect in the Burr Ridge case has not been identified, Timm said.

Also: Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade is excited about seeing Shaquille O'Neal and Penny Hardaway together again. And if it improves the team, even better.

"What's there to lose? It's simple," Wade said. "I think both sides win."

The Heat truly has nothing to lose because the deal for Hardaway, who has averaged 15.4 points per game over his career, doesn't include any guaranteed money. It just gives the 36-year-old an opportunity to compete in training camp. Hardaway hasn't played in the NBA since November 2005 because of knee problems.

"I know I still have a lot of work ahead of me," Hardaway told Houston television station KRIV. "It feels great to play with a team that is a contender for a championship. This is an opportunity to prove myself all over again."

CYCLING

Discovery Channel team plans to end operations

Lance Armstrong's former team is disbanding.

Discovery Channel said it will cease operations at the end of this season because it has been unable to find a new sponsor. Doping scandals have left cycling reeling and made sponsors jittery.

"I do not think you have seen the last of this organization in the sport," Armstrong, the seven-time Tour de France champion and co-owner of the team, said in a released statement. "But clearly things need to improve on many levels, with a more unified front, before you would see us venture back into cycling."

Also: The Italian Olympic Committee recommended Cristian Moreni, 34, be banned for two years after testing positive for testosterone during the Tour de France.

GOLF

Henderson's Lee falls in U.S. Women's Amateur

Amanda Blumenherst, who led Duke to its third straight NCAA golf championship in May, beat college and Curtis Cup teammate Jennie Lee of Henderson 5 and 4 in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Women's Amateur in Carmel, Ind.

Meanwhile, 12-year-old Alexis Thompson of Coral Springs, Fla., the youngest player to reach the quarterfinals in the tournament's 107-year history, lost 5 and 4 to 15-year-old Ha Na Jang of South Korea.

TENNIS

Federer, Nadal advance in Montreal tourney

Top-seeded Roger Federer of Switzerland and No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal of Spain continued their path to a finals showdown in the Rogers Cup in Montreal with quarterfinal victories, and third-seeded Andy Roddick of the United States was bounced.

Federer ousted Australia's Lleyton Hewitt 6-3, 6-4, and Nadal beat Canadian Frank Dancevic, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Federer will play Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic, who eliminated Russian Nikolay Davydenko 6-4, 7-5, in one semifinal match today. Nadal will take on Serbia's Novak Djokovic, who beat Roddick, 7-6 (4), 6-4.

Also: The top four seeds, led by Maria Sharapova, won their quarterfinal matches at the East West Bank Classic in Carson, Calif.

Top-seeded Sharapova, playing in the featured night match, beat No. 9 seed Elena Dementieva 6-3, 6-4 to advance to today's semifinal against fourth-seeded and fellow Russian Nadia Petrova.

In the other all-Serbian semifinal, No. 2 seed Jelena Jankovic will meet No. 3 seed Ana Ivanovic.

MISCELLANEOUS

The Tin Man to pursue Arlington Million repeat

The Tin Man has a shot at horse racing history today in the Arlington Million in Arlington Heights, Ill.

The 9-year-old gelding, a son of Triple Crown winner Affirmed, could become the first horse to win the race in back-to-back years and only the second to win it twice.

John Henry captured the inaugural race in 1981 and came back three years later -- also at 9 -- to reach the winner's circle a second time.

Since wrenching an ankle in the 2004 Hirsch, an injury that sidelined him 14 months, The Tin Man has won six of eight races. A victory today in the eight-horse field will guarantee a spot in the Breeder's Turf on Oct. 27.

The Tin Man led wire to wire last year and is listed at 3-1 in the early odds. Victor Espinoza returns to the saddle for trainer Richard Mandella.

Also: David Beckham's presence immediately doubled the television rating for his Major League Soccer debut.

D.C. United's 1-0 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy on Thursday night received an average rating of 0.45 on ESPN2, the network said. That translates to 422,000 households, the most for an MLS telecast on the network.

Kevin Guy took over as coach of the Arizona Rattlers, agreeing to a three-year contract with the Arena Football League team.

Guy was defensive coordinator for San Jose the past two seasons, helping the SaberCats won consecutive Western Division titles and the ArenaBowl last month.

Associate head coach Brett Reed was promoted to take over the Lehigh basketball program, three days after Billy Taylor left the Engineers for Ball State.
