PGA Tour finalizing plans for drug testing

The PGA Tour is nearing completion on a comprehensive drug policy, and commissioner Tim Finchem said Thursday that testing could start next year.

He said drug testing would be only one part of the policy. Still to be determined are exemptions for therapeutic use, such as former PGA champion Shaun Micheel taking medication to cope with low testosterone. Other details that have not been completed include which drugs should be banned and penalties if a player tests positive.

Also: U.S. Solheim Cup player Sherri Steinhauer shot a 5-under-par 67 in windy conditions to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the LPGA State Farm Classic at Springfield, Ill.

Defending champion Annika Sorenstam was four shots back. Top-ranked Lorena Ochoa is skipping the tournament after winning three consecutive events.

Marc Warren made eight birdies for an 8-under-par 65 and a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, Scotland.

Sprained knee might end Beckham's season

David Beckham could miss the rest of the Los Angeles Galaxy's season after being diagnosed with a sprained right knee. The English midfielder underwent an MRI exam that confirmed he sprained the medial collateral ligament in the knee, the team said.

Beckham was injured in a tackle with Pachuca midfielder Fernando Salazar in the first half of Wednesday's SuperLiga title match. The Galaxy lost 4-3 on penalty kicks.

Beckham is expected to be out about six weeks and will immediately begin rehabilitation. At that point, the Galaxy would have three regular-season games left.

The WWE said it issued suspension notices based on independent information from the prosecutor's office in Albany County, N.Y., which has been investigating illegal steroid sales.

The wrestlers' names weren't released.

Disgraced former prosecutor Mike Nifong pleaded not guilty to criminal contempt charges in Durham, N.C., stemming from his failure to turn over complete DNA testing results during the now-discredited Duke lacrosse rape case. If found in contempt, Nifong could face up to 30 days in jail and a fine of up to $500.

The Washington Redskins re-signed running back Dee Brown and placed running back Derrick Blaylock on injured reserve with a heel injury.

Former Southern California running back Emmanuel Moody enrolled at Florida. Moody, USC's second-leading rusher last year with 458 yards on 79 carries, will sit out this season under NCAA transfer rules and have three years of eligibility remaining.

USC starting center Matt Spanos, a fifth-year senior, has a torn right triceps and won't play Saturday when the top-ranked Trojans open their season against Idaho.
