Federal investigators search Vick's home

Federal law enforcement officials Thursday descended on a Surry, Va., home owned by Michael Vick, armed with a search warrant that suggests they're taking over an investigation into the Atlanta Falcons quarterback's possible involvement in dog-fighting.

More than a dozen vehicles went to the home, and investigators searched inside before turning their attention to the area where local officials found dozens of dogs in late April and evidence that suggested the home was involved in dog fighting.

Scrutinized Wie fires 73 at LPGA Championship

In perhaps her most-ever scrutinized professional round, Michelle Wie recovered from a sloppy start with three birdies in a four-hole stretch and a couple of important par saves to shoot 73 and leave herself in decent shape of playing all four days at the LPGA Championship in Havre De Grace, Md.

Former U.S. Women's Open champion Birdie Kim shot a 5-under 67, leaving her atop the leaderboard with Angela Park and Kim Saiki-Maloney.

But the focus was on Wie, who's come under criticism for withdrawing after 16 holes last week at the Ginn Tribute citing a wrist injury, showing up at Bulle Rock two days later to hit balls and getting sassy with Annika Sorenstam and LPGA Tour commissioner Carolyn Bivens over her conduct.

Also: The TPC Southwind and gusty wind gave anyone wanting a tuneup for next week's U.S. Open at Oakmont Golf Club near Pittsburgh a grinding preview.

With seven players breaking par, former UNLV player Adam Scott survived a rough start to shoot a 3-under 67 for a share of the lead with Fredrik Jacobson in the toughest opening round in the Stanford St. Jude Championship in Memphis, Tenn.

Jason Allen, a Las Vegas mortgage loan consultant, qualified for next week's U.S. Open after winning the Columbine (Colo.) sectional qualifier.

Clint Dempsey's first-half goal gave the United States a 1-0 victory over Guatemala in the opening round of the CONCACAF Gold Cup in Carson, Calif.

In the first competitive game for the Americans since their first-round World Cup exit last June, Dempsey scored off Taylor Twellman's assist in the 26th minute. That kept the United States undefeated in 20 group-play games of the Gold Cup.

The Stanley Cup Finals had record-low network TV ratings.

The three games aired on NBC averaged a 1.6 rating and a 3 share, the network said. That's down 20 percent from the 2.0/4 drawn for the same three games last year.

Anaheim won the series, beating Ottawa. The first two games were televised on cable network Versus.

Jake Arnold of Arizona capped his college career with his second NCAA decathlon championship.

Former Arizona State running back Loren Wade, 23, was convicted Thursday of second-degree murder in the slaying of another ex-Sun Devils player.

Wade was on trial for first-degree murder in the death of Brandon Falkner, 25, who was shot outside a Scottsdale nightclub on March 26, 2005. Prosecutors said Falkner was shot because Wade saw him talking to his girlfriend.

Tommy Morrison, a former world heavyweight champion boxer, will make his mixed-martial arts debut in an unsanctioned bout at Cliff Castle Casino in Camp Verde, Ariz., Saturday against John Stover.

Stover, at 325 pounds, outweighs Morrison by more than 100 pounds. Morrison, who tested positive for HIV 11 years ago, says an MMA fighter is no match for a trained boxer.
