Nadal tumbles at Rogers Cup;
Federer, Djokovic advance

Rafael Nadal bowed out at the Rogers Cup after a shocking 1-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) defeat in the second round against Croatia's Ivan Dodig on Wednesday night in Montreal.

With the tiebreaker in the final set tied 5-5, Dodig -- ranked 41st in the world -- ripped a 135 mph ace past Nadal, then finished the upset by hammering a backhand that the second-ranked Spanish star couldn't handle.

"He played very well, very aggressive," Nadal said. "He didn't feel the pressure in the important moments."

Dodig, who had 19 aces in the match, will face Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic in the next round. Tipsarevic beat Spain's Fernando Verdasco 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-3.

Earlier, Roger Federer defeated Vasek Pospisil of Canada, 7-5, 6-3. Federer, the world's former No. 1, was playing his first match since turning 30 Monday.

Top-seeded Novak Djokovic survived a scare before defeating Russia's Nikolay Davydenko, 7-5, 6-1. The 2007 Rogers Cup champion improved his stunning 2011 record to 49-1 overall, including 25-0 on hard courts.

Also: World No. 1 and defending champion Caroline Wozniacki lost to Roberta Vinci 6-4, 7-5 in a second-round match at the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

Wozniacki, who has won a WTA-leading five titles this year, was up 5-1 in the second set and looking to rally. However, the No. 22-ranked Italian stormed back by converting three break points to complete the upset.

Former No. 1 Serena Williams beat Julia Goerges 6-1, 7-6 (7), and fifth-seeded Maria Sharapova beat Bojana Jovanovski, 6-1, 7-5.

Before her match, Williams announced that she would play for the United States Fed Cup team next year.

Kurt Busch to fill in for ailing
Keselowski in Nationwide race

Kurt Busch will drive the No. 22 Dodge in place of injured Penske teammate Brad Keselowski in NASCAR's Nationwide Series race at Watkins Glen, N.Y., on Saturday.

Keselowski pulled out a gutsy Sprint Cup victory Sunday at Pocono, holding off Kyle Busch over the final laps despite a fractured left ankle and strained back suffered a week ago in a crash while testing at Road Atlanta.

The last time Kurt Busch drove a Nationwide race at The Glen, defeated Robby Gordon in a fender-bending final two laps for the win in 2006.

Also: Earnhardt Ganassi Racing fired two team members charged with trafficking in marijuana. Trevor Lysne and Jerome David Frey appeared in North Carolina Superior Court on Wednesday to face charges. The team fired them later in the day.

Lysne was a tire changer on the crew for Juan Pablo Montoya, and Frey was a mechanic with the NASCAR team. The two were arrested Tuesday after Huntersville, N.C., police seized 10.5 pounds of marijuana that had been shipped from California.

Jurgen Klinsmann's debut coaching the U.S. men's soccer team was bolstered by Robbie Rogers' tying goal late in the second half to help the Americans salvage a 1-1 draw against Mexico in Philadelphia.

Oribe Peralta scored for Mexico in a rematch of the Gold Cup final, won by Mexico 4-2.

"The case is based on admissions from both of them," said Santoro, who provided no further details.
