Kruger's five-year pact approved by regents

The Nevada Board of Regents unanimously approved UNLV basketball coach Lon Kruger's new five-year contract Thursday in Reno. The contract guarantees Kruger $5.2 million.

Kruger led the Rebels to a 30-7 record and a spot in the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16 for the first time in 16 years. He is 64-34 in three years at the school.

Also: Andre McFarland, a former Durango High School basketball star, has signed a letter of intent with Colorado State.

McFarland, a 6-foot-6-inch swingman, played one year at Brewster Academy (N.H.), where he averaged 15.0 points and 10.0 rebounds. He averaged 23.0 points, 8.6 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 2.1 blocks his senior year at Durango.

Colorado was placed on two years' probation and fined $100,000 by the NCAA for inadvertently undercharging 133 athletes for meals totaling $61,700 over six academic years. The school also was ordered to cut one football scholarship for the next three seasons.

The probation will not limit Colorado's TV exposure or NCAA postseason appearances.

Tennessee basketball coach Pat Summitt fainted at her Knoxville home and was being treated for dehydration at a hospital. Her family requested no information on her condition be released, but WBIR-TV reported that the 55-year-old was conscious and responsive.

North Carolina bowler leads Senior U.S. Open

Tom Baker of King, N.C., was the only bowler to finish undefeated in the first of three round-robin match-play blocks in the PBA Senior U.S. Open at the Suncoast.

Baker had an eight-game pinfall of 1,747 and has a 35-game total pinfall of 8,119. Amateur Rick Minier of Houston is second at 8,099, followed by David Ozio of Beaumont, Texas, at 8,021 and amateur Terry Leong of Las Vegas at 8,014.

The second match-play block is scheduled for 7 a.m. today, with the third at noon. The top four will advance to the stepladder finals at 3:30 p.m., with the winner getting $20,000.

Also: Mario Ancic withdrew from Wimbledon with mononucleosis, and Li Na pulled out with a rib injury.

Ancic, seeded 18th, will be replaced by Frank Dancevic of Canada. Li, seeded 18th, will be replaced by Alize Cornet of France.

The Milwaukee Bucks picked up the final option years on the contracts of center Andrew Bogut and forward Charlie Villanueva.

Bogut averaged career highs in points (12.3), rebounds (8.0) and assists (3.0) in 66 games last season while shooting 55.3 percent from the field. Villanueva appeared in 39 games and averaged 11.8 points and 5.8 rebounds.

Carolina Panthers rookie receiver Dwayne Jarrett escaped serious injury after his car was rear-ended Wednesday night on Interstate 77 near Charlotte, N.C. Jarrett sustained bruises, said his agent, Darin Morgan.

The Atlanta Falcons will be without receiver Brian Finneran for a second straight season. The 31-year-old had his second reconstructive surgery on his left knee in two years last week.

Former NFL punter Rick Tuten was arrested and charged in Ocala, Fla., for buying stolen goods and reselling the merchandise for a profit.
