Benson hangs on, wins truck race in Wisconsin

Johnny Benson took the lead just past halfway, then held off Ron Hornaday Jr. on a late restart to win his second straight NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at the Milwaukee Mile in West Allis, Wis., on Friday.

Hornaday finished second, allowing him to make up some ground in the championship points standings on leader Mike Skinner, who dominated the first half of the race but finished fourth. Todd Bodine finished third.

Also: Sebastien Bourdais won the provisional pole for the Grand Prix of Cleveland, zooming around the bumpy and dusty airport course in 56.961 seconds -- the only driver in the 17-car field under 57 seconds.

Bourdais got one point for his second provisional pole win this season, giving him 106 points and increasing his series lead to 12 over Australia's Will Power, who was second in 57.301 seconds.

Tony Schumacher (Top Fuel), Tommy Johnson Jr. (Funny Car), Richie Stevens (Pro Stock) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle) led first-day qualifying in the NHRA SuperNationals at Englishtown, N.J.

Ljubicic makes final in grass-court event

Ivan Ljubicic reached the final of the Ordina Open grass-court tournament in Den Bosch, Netherlands, beating Julien Benneteau of France, 7-6 (1), 3-6, 6-4. The other semifinal, between Peter Wessels and Antony Dupuis, was suspended by rain and will be completed today.

In the women's event, top-seeded Jelena Jankovic advanced to her sixth final of the season by beating Dinara Safina of Russia, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (6). The Serb will play Russian Anna Chakvetadze, who beat Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia, 6-3, 6-4.

Also: Defending champion Justine Henin needed less than an hour to beat Marion Bartoli 6-1, 6-3 to reach the final of the Eastbourne International in Eastbourne, England. Henin will face Amelie Mauresmo, who advanced when Nadia Petrova retired with an injury after losing the first set, 6-4.

Arnaud Clement beat Jonas Bjorkman 6-2, 6-4 to reach the final of the Nottingham Open in Nottingham, England. Clement will play Ivo Karlovic of Croatia, a 7-5, 6-4 winner over Dmitry Tursunov, in today's final.

Regents OK extension for Wolf Pack coach Fox

The Nevada Board of Regents has approved a three-year contract extension for UNR basketball coach Mark Fox that runs through 2014.

By Fox's request, the deal includes no new raises. He makes a base salary of $400,000, plus an extra $100,000 paid by boosters.

Fox has taken the Wolf Pack to an 81-18 record in his three seasons.

Also: Tennessee basketball coach Pat Summitt was released from a Knoxville hospital after being treated for dehydration. Summitt, 55, had a dizzy spell and fainted at her home Thursday.

Suspended Chicago Bears defensive tackle Tank Johnson was stopped for driving 40 mph in a 25 mph zone at 3:30 a.m. Friday in Gilbert, Ariz., and police said they drew blood from the NFL player to determine whether he was drunk. He was arrested but released without being booked or charged.

Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley has agreed to an 11-year deal worth up to $1.2 million annually with bonuses, making him the highest-paid AD in the country. The school has won two national basketball championships and one national football title in the last year.
