Serena wins Toronto opener;
Clijsters withdraws with injury
Serena Williams rolled to a 6-0, 6-3 first-round victory against Ukraine's Alona Bondarenko on Tuesday at the Rogers Cup in Toronto.
Williams, the winner of 13 Grand Slam tournaments, got through the first set in 16 minutes using her speed and power, as a bewildered Bondarenko scattered across the court helplessly.
Bondarenko put up some fight early in the second set, but she could do little to contain Williams' imposing serve and forehand.
Meanwhile, No. 2 seed Kim Clijsters withdrew from her second-round match in the second set while leading 6-3, 1-2 against China's Zheng Jie.
Clijsters shook her head after hitting a forehand and left the match with a reported stomach muscle problem.
Despite winning the Australian Open, Clijsters has been hampered this year by injuries. She injured her right ankle in April, then withdrew from tournaments in Rome and Madrid because of right shoulder and wrist injuries.
Also: Two-time defending champion Andy Murray headed home early from the Rogers Cup, tumbling 6-3, 6-1 to 35th-ranked Kevin Anderson in the second round in Montreal.
Murray, who had a bye in the first round, was seeded fourth. He's also fourth in the ATP rankings.

Duke freshman guard Cook
to continue resting hurt knee
A lingering injury will prevent one of Duke's promising freshmen basketball players from taking part in the Blue Devils' exhibition games halfway around the globe.
Guard Quinn Cook is being shut down until at least mid-September to allow his knee injury to continue healing, coach Mike Krzyzewski said.
While Krzyzewski "definitely" expects Cook to be back by the time preseason practice starts in October, the coach said he noticed during workouts before the team's upcoming trip to China and Dubai that Cook didn't have enough strength in the knee. Cook played his senior year in high school with injured ligaments in his right knee.
Team officials said Cook will make the trip overseas but won't play.
Cook, one of three McDonald's All-Americans in Duke's freshman class, certainly could have used the playing time during the four-game, two-week excursion to figure out how to play in a crowded backcourt that includes returning contributors Seth Curry and Andre Dawkins and heralded freshman Austin Rivers.
Also: Men's swimmer Cody Roberts and women's track and field standout Amanda Bingson were named UNLV's Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year.
In his sophomore year, Roberts was named Mountain West Conference swimmer of the year, winning three individual titles and helping the Rebels to four relay victories at the MWC Championships.
Bingson earned All-America status in the hammer throw, finishing fourth at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She won the event at the MWC meet, where she was named the top women's performer.
The UNLV women's soccer team was picked to finish third in the Mountain West this season. Defending MWC tournament champion San Diego State was picked first, followed by defending regular-season champ New Mexico.

UFL commissioner to announce
plans for 2011 season today
The United Football League, which includes the Las Vegas Locomotives, will go ahead with its third season, despite losing more than $100 million in its first two years. Commissioner Michael Huyghue wrote "we will play" in a text message to The Associated Press.
Huyghue said the league will announce details today.
The UFL on July 19 announced it would push back the start of its training camps a month and delay the start of the season from August to September. That fueled speculation the second-tier pro league would fold.
Also: The former manager of late boxing champ Arturo Gatti said new evidence will show his 2009 death wasn't a suicide.
Pat Lynch said the results of a 10-month private investigation will be released at the end of August.
Gatti was found in July 2009 while he and his family vacationed in Brazil. The popular junior welterweight champion had retired from boxing two years earlier with a 40-9 record.
Gatti's wife was arrested for his then-alleged murder, but she was later released. Police concluded Gatti hanged himself from a wooden staircase column in their rented apartment.
Colombia men's soccer coach Hernan Dario Gomez resigned following reports he struck a woman in a bar. The Colombian soccer federation said in a statement that Gomez "assumed the consequences of his acts."
The widely reported confrontation took place Saturday at a bar in Bogota.
