Ljubicic, Chakvetadze win grass-court titles

Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia and Anna Chakvetadze of Russia won grass-court championships Saturday in the Ordina Open at Den Bosch, Netherlands.

The second-seeded Ljubicic beat unseeded Peter Wessels of the Netherlands 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (4) for his first title on grass, and the third-seeded Chakvetadze defeated top-seeded Jelena Jankovic of Serbia, 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-3.

Wessels reached the final with a 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3) victory over Antony Dupuis of France in a match that was suspended Friday because of darkness.

Also: Ivo Karlovic hit 21 aces, including one at 153 mph, to win his first Nottingham Open title with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Arnaud Clement in Nottingham, England. The title was the Croatian's first on grass.

Defending champion Justine Henin defeated second-seeded Amelie Mauresmo 7-5, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (2) in the final of the Eastbourne International in Eastbourne, England.

Hamburg QB Bramlet stars in World Bowl win

Casey Bramlet threw for 347 yards and a record four touchdowns, leading the Hamburg Sea Devils past the Frankfurt Galaxy 37-28 in Frankfurt, Germany, in the highest scoring World Bowl.

Bramlet, allocated by the Washington Redskins, was named the Most Valuable Player in sending Hamburg to its first NFL Europa championship as a crowd of 48,125 watched at Commerzbank Arena.

Also: Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Fred Evans was arrested and charged early Saturday after he refused to leave a taxi on South Beach, then fought with officers, police said. Evans appeared in one game as a rookie last season.

U.S. women's soccer scores early, tops Brazil

Kristine Lilly and Abby Wambach scored in the first 17 minutes as the U.S. women's soccer team defeated Brazil 2-0 in East Rutherford, N.J. The game was the second in a six-match warm-up series heading toward the World Cup in September.

The top-ranked Americans are unbeaten in regulation time (35-0-7) since Greg Ryan became coach in 2005.

Also: Invasor, the 2006 Horse of the Year, was retired after cracking a bone in his right hind ankle during a workout at Belmont Park in New York. The injury was not life-threatening, and the 5-year-old horse will be sent to stud at Shadwell Farm in Lexington, Ky.

Invasor won 11 races and $7.8 million during his career.

FC Barcelona has agreed to pay Arsenal $32 million for striker Thierry Henry. The 29-year-old Frenchman must pass a physical and terms of a four-year contract must be worked out to complete the transfer.

Freddy Adu scored once and set up the winner as the U.S. Under-20 men beat Chile 2-1 in East Rutherford, N.J. The game was the final one for the American soccer team before the U-20 World Cup in Canada.

Alinghi began its America's Cup title defense by defeating challenger Emirates Team New Zealand by 35 seconds in the best-of-9 final in Valencia, Spain, the start of a sailing showdown for the oldest trophy in international sports.

Phoenix Mercury guard Diana Taurasi received a two-game suspension from the WNBA for inappropriate conduct toward game officials in an 87-84 loss to the Detroit Shock on Friday.

Top-ranked Rebecca Ward of Beaverton, Ore., defeated No. 3 Xue Tan of China 15-7 to win the gold medal in women's saber at the Fencing World Cup and Grand Prix at the Orleans. The event ends today.
