UNLV duo shocks No. 3 team in women's tennis

UNLV's Elena Gantcheva and Kristina Nedeltcheva upset third-ranked Whitney McCray and Kristi Miller of national champion Georgia Tech 6-2, 6-2 Thursday in the first round of the NCAA women's tennis doubles championships in Athens, Ga.

Gantcheva and Nedeltcheva, ranked 20th, will play 21st-ranked Lindsay Burdette and Anne Yelsey of Stanford today. The Rebels duo defeated Burdette and Yelsey in the regular season.

Also: UNLV sophomore Elliot Wronski lost to fifth-ranked Kevin Anderson of Illinois 6-1, 6-3 in the second round of the NCAA men's tennis individual championships in Athens. Wronski, ranked 60th, finished the season 20-13.

The UNLV women's basketball team has signed five players to national letters of intent.

Guard India Chaney (McDonough 35 High, New Orleans), forward Jasmine Nelson (McDonough), guard/forward Karla Gergelova (Czech Republic), forward Raquel Jupiter (El Camino Community College, Torrance, Calif.) and guard Shannon Oberg (Daytona Beach, Fla., CC) will play for the team.

UNLV swimmers Johan Claar (first team) and Kim Bonney (second team) have been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII University Division at-large teams. Claar has a cumulative 3.78 GPA with a major in business, and Bonney has a cumulative 3.89 GPA with a major in accounting.

Two-time defending champion Duke took an eight-stroke lead after the third round of the NCAA women's golf tournament at Daytona Beach, Fla., and Purdue's Christel Boeljon moved five strokes ahead in the individual competition. The Blue Devils are at 16-over-par 880 with one round left; Boeljon is at 6-under 210.

Argentine leads Senior PGA Championship

Argentina's Eduardo Romero shot a 4-under-par 68 to take a one-stroke lead over Naomichi "Joe" Ozaki after the first round of the Senior PGA Championship at Kiawah Island, S.C.

Romero birdied all four par 5s, landing his approaches inside 5 feet each time.

Also: Anthony Kim birdied the last six holes -- the PGA Tour's longest birdie streak this season -- for a 7-under 63 and a one-stroke lead in the suspended first round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas.

The 21-year-old rookie was among 57 players -- half the field -- to finish play before a thunderstorm flooded the course.

Charlotta Sorenstam shot a bogey-free 8-under 64, matching her career low, to take a one-shot lead over Beth Bader after one round of the LPGA Corning Classic in Corning, N.Y.

Englishmen Justin Rose and Paul Broadhurst shot 6-under 66s to share the first-round lead in the PGA European Tour's BMW PGA Championship in Virginia Water, England.

Micheal Ray Richardson, a former NBA player whose anti-Semitic comments to a newspaper last season drew a suspension from the Continental Basketball Association, was hired as coach of the Oklahoma City Cavalry.

Former NBA player Henry James, 41, was sentenced to five years in federal prison after pleading guilty in Fort Wayne, Ind., to selling crack cocaine to an undercover police officer last summer.
