Banned claims Del Mar feature marred by crash

Banned took the lead in the stretch, lost it briefly, then came on strong in the final strides to beat Midnight Interlude by a nose in the $250,000 Del Mar Derby in Del Mar, Calif.

The race was marred by catastrophic injuries to Burns in the run to the clubhouse turn. The horse fractured sesamoid bones in his right foreleg and was euthanized. Jockey Patrick Valenzuela strained his right leg and was replaced aboard his remaining two mounts.

Ridden by Garrett Gomez, Banned ran 9 furlongs on the turf in 1:47.93 and paid $3.80, $2.80 and $2.60 as the 9-10 favorite in a field of nine 3-year-olds.

In the $100,000 Torrey Pines Stakes for 3-year-old fillies, Great Hot rallied in the deep stretch to win by three-quarters of a length and give jockey Chantal Sutherland her first stakes win at the seaside track in Del Mar, Calif.

Great Hot ran one mile on the synthetic Polytrack surface in 1:35.88 and paid $7.60 to win. The 9-10 favorite, Sugarinthemorning, was second.

Also: Grace Hall edged favored Judy the Beauty by 1¾ lengths in the 120th running of the $250,000 Spinaway Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Ramon Dominguez rode the Anthony Dutrow-trained Grace Hall, undefeated in two starts after running 7 furlongs in 1:23.74 seconds.

Grace Hall paid $8.80, $3.90 and $2.50.

Earlier, Favored Brilliant Speed, ridden by John Velazquez, won the $100,000 Saranac Stakes for 3-year-olds by 2 lengths over Queen'splatekitten.

Bolt anchors Jamaica to record in 4x100 relay

Usain Bolt powered home to help Jamaica set a world record of 37.04 seconds in the men's 4x100-meter relay at the world track and field championships in Daegu, South Korea.

Nesta Carter led off the relay and handed to Michael Frater. Yohan Blake, the 100 world champion following the disqualification of Bolt in the final, ran the third leg and handed off to Bolt.

France finished second in 38.20, and Saint Kitts and Nevis took bronze in 38.49.

The United States did not finish.

Florida A&M women's basketball player Shannon Washington died after being stabbed in the neck following an argument in Tallahassee, Fla., police said.

A 20-year-old woman, Starquineshia Palmer, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

According to a police report, authorities were summoned around 2 a.m. Sunday and found Washington, who was taken to Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, where she died.

The report said the two had been arguing when Washington was stabbed.

Andrew Reynolds, of Hollywood, Calif., won the Maloof Money Cup Washington D.C. street skateboarding contest and $160,000.

Reynolds outlasted his rivals on a steamy day to earn his first Maloof Money Cup title. With less than a minute left in the final jam of the day, Reynolds took a quick water break, headed to the golden stair rail and nailed a kickflip lipslide to win the contest.

Ronnie Creager was second, Bastien Salabanzi was third and Manny Santiago took fourth.

The next stop on the tour is Maloof Money Cup World Championships in Kimberley, South Africa, Sept. 28 through Oct 2.
