Baseball team takes tumble
against Cal State Northridge

The UNLV baseball team gave up nine runs in the first four innings, losing to Cal State Northridge 9-3 on Tuesday night at Wilson Stadium.

The Rebels (19-11) allowed one run in the first and another in the second, but answered in the bottom of both innings, on a Rance Roundy RBI single and a Scott Berke homer.

Northridge then took control, scoring seven runs in the next two innings to take a 9-2 lead. Kyle Attle had a three-run double in the third inning, and Adam Barry had a two-run double in the fourth.

Roundy, Berke and Ryan Scott each finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Brady Borden took the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits in 2 1/3 innings, with no walks and no strikeouts.

Also: The UNLV women's golf team finished 10th at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate in Half Moon Bay, Calif.

UNLV shot 15-over 303, its best score of the three-round event, to finish at 60-over 924 in the 12-team tournament. Oregon won at 27-over 891, one shot ahead of Texas A&M.

The Rebels' Therese Koelbaek jumped six spots in the individual standings, shooting 1-over 73 to tie for sixth at 7-over 223. Texas A&M's Katerina Ruzickova won at 2-over 218.

UNLV's Amanda Oliveto was named Mountain West Conference pitcher of the week for the second time this season.

Oliveto threw her second straight no-hitter in a 9-0 victory against Seattle, then threw a seven-hit complete game in a 6-2 win over Loyola Marymount.

Playoff-pushing Rangers lose
Callahan to broken right leg

Ryan Callahan, the Rangers' second-leading scorer, is out indefinitely because of a broken right leg, just as New York is making a final push for an Eastern Conference playoff spot.

Callahan, who has a career-high 23 goals and 25 assists this season, was injured with 1:45 left in Monday night's stirring 5-3 comeback win over the Boston Bruins that pushed the Rangers from eighth place into a tie with Montreal for sixth.

The injury won't require surgery to fix but is likely season-ending.

"It's long term," Rangers coach John Tortorella said.

Also: The Philadelphia Flyers placed goaltender Michael Leighton on re-entry waivers with the hope that he can rejoin the team's postseason roster.

General manager Paul Holmgren confirmed the move, which allows a 24-hour period for other teams to claim him at half of his remaining contract, while the Flyers would pay the other half. If he is unclaimed by noon EST today, he would be able to join the Flyers again.

Leighton, 29, one of many heroes in Philadelphia's improbable run to the Stanley Cup Finals last season as a No. 7 seed, was originally placed on waivers Jan. 3.

He has been in the American Hockey League ever since, while the Flyers went with the goalie tandem of rookie Sergei Bobrovsky and veteran Brian Boucher.

Schalke, Real Madrid post
blowouts in Champions League

Schalke and Real Madrid moved to the brink of a place in the Champions League semifinals by recording big wins in the first leg of their home-and-home quarterfinal series.

Schalke, which is struggling in the German league, thrashed defending champion Inter Milan 5-2 in Milan, Italy.

Madrid took full advantage of the sending-off of Tottenham striker Peter Crouch in the 15th minute to rout the English club 4-0 in Madrid, Spain.

Manchester United visits Chelsea and Barcelona hosts Shakhtar Donetsk in quarterfinal first-leg games today.

Also: Wayne Rooney acknowledged using offensive language during an English Premier League game but will appeal his automatic two-match ban.

England's Football Association said the Manchester United striker deemed the punishment "clearly excessive."

The governing body will hear Rooney's appeal today. If Rooney's appeal fails, he risks further discipline in addition to his suspension for Saturday's league match against Fulham and the following week's FA Cup semifinal against Manchester City.

Second-ranked women's tennis star Kim Clijsters will be sidelined for a month with shoulder and wrist injuries, forcing her to miss Belgium's Fed Cup semifinal next week against the Czech Republic. She is aiming to play the French Open.

The reigning U.S. Open and Australian Open champion said a busy spring schedule overexerted her right shoulder and wrist. She will not be able to hold a tennis racket for the next few weeks.

Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe will renew their rivalry for the first time in 10 years at a World Team Tennis match.

Connors will play for the Philadelphia Freedoms against McEnroe's New York Sportimes on July 14 at Randall's Island in Manhattan. The Sportimes said Connors and McEnroe also will play doubles.
