UNLV baseball rides offense to victory against Air Force

The UNLV baseball team pounded out 19 hits in a 14-9 victory over Air Force in a Mountain West Conference game Sunday at Air Force Academy, Colo.

Nine Rebels got hits, and Travis Feiner led the scoring blitz, going 3-for-6 with a three-run homer and five RBIs. Richie Jimenez was 4-for-5 with a run scored, Scott Dysinger was 3-for-6 with two RBIs and three runs scored, and Casey Sato went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

The Rebels (32-20, 9-11 MWC) trailed 7-5 after three innings but took control with a six-run fourth inning.

Also: Billy Kennedy returned to Texas A&M, leaving Murray State to replace Mark Turgeon as the Aggies' basketball coach. Turgeon left last week to coach Maryland after Gary Williams retired.

The 47-year-old Kennedy, a former assistant at A&M, will be introduced on the campus today.

Kennedy was the Ohio Valley Conference coach of the year twice in his five seasons with the Racers.

His best season at Murray State came in 2009-10, when the team went a school-record 31-5, won the Ohio Valley regular-season and tournament titles, and beat Vanderbilt in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Olympic marathon champion Wanjiru dies following fall

A police chief in Nairobi, Kenya, said reigning Olympic marathon champion Sammy Wanjiru died after a fall from a balcony. He was 24.

John Mbijiwe said Wanjiru died early today. Mbijiwe said that initial information indicated Wanjiru died after jumping from his balcony, but the death is subject to further investigation.

In the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Wanjiru became the first Kenyan to win a gold medal in the marathon, finishing in an Olympic-record 2 hours, 6 minutes, 32 seconds.

Also: Americans Tyson Gay and Allyson Felix won sprint street races in Manchester, England.

Gay won a 150-meter race, missing out on Usain Bolt's world record in difficult conditions. He pulled away early and ran the straight track in steady rain in 14.51 seconds -- 0.16 seconds slower than the mark set by Bolt at the same event in 2009.

Gay covered the last 100 meters in just 8.88. American sprinter Darvis Patton finished second in 14.98

Felix outclassed the rest of a four-woman field to win a straight 200-meter race. The three-time world 200 champion eased down the rain-lashed track in 22.12 seconds, helped by a 2.6 meter-per-second tail wind.

WADA launching probe into leaked doping suspicion list

The World-Anti Doping Agency will conduct its own independent investigation to determine the source of the leak of an International Cycling Union document that ranks riders at last year's Tour de France on a scale of doping suspicion.

WADA director David Howman informed the agency's executive committee and foundation board at a semi-annual meeting in Montreal that he pledged its "full support" of the UCI's own investigation into the leak of what it termed "an internal working document."

On Friday, French sports daily L'Equipe published what it said was UCI's "index of suspicion" for all 198 riders from the 2010 Tour on a grade of zero to 10.

Howman said he felt he had no option but to proceed with his investigation to rule out the possibility that the leak came from someone within the agency.

Riders reacted angrily to the existence of the list and demanded an explanation from the UCI.

Two riders were listed highest at 10 -- Carlos Barredo of Spain and Yaroslav Popovych of Ukraine, one of Lance Armstrong's RadioShack teammates; one at 9 -- Denis Menchov of Russia; and several more at 8, including Jurgen Van Den Broeck, Belgium. Most of the riders scored below 4, with 49 at zero.

Armstrong and teammate Levi Leipheimer were listed at 4. Last year's winner, Alberto Contador, was listed at 5 and ultimately tested positive, and he's been embroiled in a defense ever since.

Also: Petteri Nokelainen scored the first of Finland's five third-period goals in a 6-1 win over Sweden in the title game of the world hockey championships in Bratislava, Slovakia.

Nokelainen beat goalie Viktor Fasth at 2:35 of the final period on a breakaway to give Finland a 2-1 lead. Niko Kapanen scored 46 seconds later, and the rout was on.

In the bronze medal game, Roman Cervenka had a hat trick to lead the Czech Republic over Russia, 7-4.

Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke rallied from four shots down to win the Iberdrola Open by three strokes after third-round leader Chris Wood stumbled on the back nine and shot 6-over 76.

Clarke shot 1-under 69 to finish at 6-under 274 in the European PGA Tour event in Son Servera, Spain. Wood tied for second with David Lynn (70).
