Woods misses cut for only eighth time on PGA Tour
Tiger Woods shot a second-round 1-over-par 73 - his eighth consecutive round in the 70s - to finish at par 144 and miss the cut by one stroke Friday at the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, N.C.
Woods didn't make a birdie on any of the par 5s or any hole on his back nine, missing a 4-foot birdie putt on his 17th hole with the cut on the line. It was the eighth time in 267 events on the PGA Tour that he missed the cut.
Henderson resident Nick Watney fired an 8-under 64 to take a one-stroke lead over Webb Simpson. Watney, who is at 12-under 132, had gone nine straight rounds on the tour without breaking 70 and had failed to crack the top 10 in all nine of his stroke-play tournaments this year.
Former UNLV star Ryan Moore, who shared the first-round lead, had a penalty stroke for his ball moving on a tap-in and settled for a 70. He was at 9-under 135.
Also: Tom Lehman had an eagle and five birdies on the first eight holes on the back nine and then bogeyed the par-4 18th for a 7-under 65 and a one-shot lead after the first round of the Champions Tour's Insperity Championship at The Woodlands, Texas.
France's Gregory Bourdy shot a 6-under 66 in windy conditions to take a one-stroke lead after the second round of the 100th Spanish Open in Seville, Spain. He is at 5-under 139.

Rebels shoot 1 over, fifth in MWC men's golf meet
The UNLV men's golf team shot 1-over-par 285 and is fifth after the first round of the 54-hole Mountain West Conference Championship in Tucson, Ariz. San Diego leads at 4-under 280.
The Rams' Zahkai Brown shot 5-under 66 to take a one-stroke individual lead. UNLV's Kurt Kitayama shot 70 and is in a seven-way tie for fifth, and defending MWC champion Derek Ernst shot 71 and is tied for 12th.
Also: UNLV lost to host San Diego State 10-7 in a Mountain West Conference baseball game. Joe Swanner had three hits and Mark Shannon and Erik VanMeetren two each for the Rebels (21-26, 5-14 MWC).
Stefany Valentino hit a fourth-inning grand slam to power UNLV to an 8-4 victory over New Mexico in a Mountain West Conference softball game at Albuquerque. Tayler Van Acker and Kylie Wagner also homered for the Rebels (20-24, 1-6).
Aley Rohde, a freshman on the Arizona women's basketball team last season, will transfer to UNLV. The 6-foot-5-inch center from Cave Creek, Ariz., will sit out the 2012-13 season because of NCAA transfer rules and will have three years of eligibility remaining.
The College of Southern Nevada baseball team split with Utah State-Eastern at Morse Stadium, winning the first game 15-5 and losing the second 11-10 in 11 innings. Andy Weissberg went 6-for-9 with two home runs, six RBIs and five runs for CSN (33-21, 20-18 Scenic West Athletic Conference).
Erin Romero hit a walk-off, three-run homer in the seventh inning to give CSN an 18-15 victory over Snow College in the first game of a SWAC softball doubleheader at Russell Road Recreation Complex. The Coyotes (26-32, 21-25 SWAC) lost the second game, 10-5.

Pilots' Bennett trims list to UNLV, Kentucky, Oregon
Findlay Prep senior power forward Anthony Bennett trimmed the list of colleges he is considering to UNLV, Kentucky and Oregon, Pilots assistant coach Todd Simon confirmed. Florida had been considered a possible leader.
Simon said Bennett took an unofficial visit to UNLV with his mother on Thursday and has taken unofficial visits to Kentucky and Oregon. The NCAA's spring signing period ends May 16.
Findlay Prep senior center Matt Willms announced Thursday on Twitter that he will take an official visit to Missouri this weekend and later to Texas-El Paso.
Also: Rosie Napravnik became the first female jockey to win the Kentucky Oaks, keeping Believe You Can near the front from the start and pulling away from Broadway's Alibi in the $1 million race at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. Believe You Can paid $29.60, $11.80 and $6.40. Broadway's Alibi returned $6 and $4.20, and favorite Grace Hall paid $3.20 to show.
Junior Seau's family will donate his brain for research into football- related head injuries. Seau, a former San Diego Chargers star linebacker, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest Wednesday at his home in Oceanside, Calif. Team chaplain Shawn Mitchell said he didn't know where the brain will be sent.
The NFL Players Association has challenged the league's suspensions of four players in the New Orleans Saints bounty case. The union contends in a grievance that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell does not have the authority to suspend the players for conduct prior to the sport's current labor deal being ratified last summer.
Clemson All-America wide receiver Sammy Watkins was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana and a controlled substance in Columbia, S.C.
Colorado State junior defensive ends Colton Paulhus and Nordly Capi and junior linebacker Michael Orakpo were expelled from school after being charged with disorderly conduct following an off-campus brawl in Fort Collins on April 6. Orakpo and Capi were starters last season.
Former Ohio State and Indianapolis Colts quarterback Art Schlichter was sentenced to almost 11 years in prison by a federal judge in Columbus, Ohio, for scamming participants in what authorities called a million-dollar sports ticket scheme. Schlichter, 52, previously spent time in prison in Indiana because of a gambling addiction.
Orlando Magic forward Ryan Anderson was named the NBA's Most Improved Player. Anderson, in his fourth season, averaged 16.1 points and 7.7 rebounds and led the league in 3-pointers made (166).
North Carolina hired Hubert Davis as an assistant basketball coach, bringing back a former Tar Heels player. He had been working as a college basketball analyst for ESPN.
The Los Angeles Dodgers signed outfielder Bobby Abreu, a 38-year-old who had been relegated to part-time duty with the Los Angeles Angels and hit .208 in 24 at-bats before he was released on April 27.
The baseball that rolled through Boston Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner's legs in the 1986 World Series was sold at an auction in Dallas for $418,250. Heritage Auctions said the ball was sold to a buyer who wished to remain anonymous.
Tony Schumacher, winless in 29 races since October 2010, raced to the Top Fuel qualifying lead in the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga. Robert Hight (Funny Car), Jason Line (Pro Stock) and Hector Arana (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also led first-day qualifying.
